What to Expect If Ronda Rousey's Next Fight Is Against Cat Zingano

Matt JuulFeb 25, 2013

Adding another arm to her collection during Saturday night's historic UFC 157 main event, women's bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey seems like an unbeatable force following her first-round submission win over Liz Carmouche.

One woman who'd like to have a chance to end Rousey's reign is the undefeated and dangerous Cat Zingano, who's set to face former Strikeforce champ Miesha Tate in the UFC's second-ever women's fight. If "Alpha" can secure a date with the champ by beating Tate later this year, she could prove to be Rousey's toughest test to date.

Like the champ, Zingano is a finisher.

Wife of BJJ black belt Mauricio Zingano, the former Invicta fighter has a stellar ground game with a deep arsenal of submissions. Most recently choking out Raquel Pennington at Invicta FC 3, Zingano has the grappling know-how to at least challenge Rousey on the ground.

The champ has a penchant for giving up her back, as seen in her bouts with Tate and Carmouche and has thus far come out relatively unscathed. However, should she do that against a BJJ ace like Zingano, landing in that precarious position could prove costly.

Another way Zingano could test Rousey is from the top.

In virtually every one of the champ's fights, she's been able to secure advantageous positions, such as the mount or side control—almost never playing guard from her back. Considering Zingano's powerful ground-and-pound and tenacity from the top, she could do some real damage to the champ if she can put her on her back.

However, Rousey has the uncanny ability to dictate the pace of her fights, so I don't expect to see anything that different should this potential matchup happen.

I see the champ using her jab to back Zingano against the fence and establish the clinch. While "Alpha" is a talented grappler, I just don't see her stopping Rousey's sweeps, but she should be better in the scramble than the champ's previous opponents.

Despite Zingano's skills and killer instinct, Rousey's athleticism and world-class judo would once again give her the edge.
