Making a Case for These 3 Teams to Trade Up for the No. 1 Overall Pick

Zach KruseFeb 22, 2013

Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs aren't locking themselves into taking a player with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft.

In fact, with no consensus at the top of the draft, the Chiefs might be willing to deal the pick to the right suitor.ย

Reid said just that at the NFL Scouting Combine Thursday in Indianapolis, via NFL.com.

"Listen, yeah, we're going to evaluate everything," Reid said. "We're just not going to give it away. So we'd have to see what people throw our way. It's a pretty valuable pick, I'd say."

Chiefs general manager John Dorsey echoed those thoughts, via Sports Illustrated.ย

โ€œItโ€™s a very unique situationโ€ฆif anyone wants to come up, theyโ€™re more than welcome,โ€ Dorsey said. โ€œIโ€™ll pick or trade it.โ€

The Chiefs have an obvious need at quarterback, but there doesn't appear to be a player at that position worth taking with the top overall pick. If Kansas City feels like it can get more value from the draft by trading down, then pursuing such a deal with a team willing to move up makes good business sense.ย

While such a trade down makes sense in theory, the Chiefs would also need the other half of that equation: a team willing to deal their way up in the draft.

Considering how scattered the top of most draft boards are, dealing up to the No. 1 overall pick could be as cheap this year as any previously.ย

Are there any teams that should make such a deal?ย

Here are three suggestions:

Arizona Cardinals

The gem of this draft is likely Texas A&M Luke Joeckel, and the Cardinals need an offensive tackle as badly as any team in the NFL.

Arizona might not feel comfortable in sitting at No. 7 and waiting for a guy like Central Michigan's Eric Fisher to fall there. Moving up to No. 1 ensures the Cardinals get the franchise left tackle they desperately need.

Philadelphia Eagles

There's an obvious connection between Reid and the Eagles, and Mike Garafolo of USA Today reported last week that the Chiefs might want to deal for quarterback Nick Foles. If the Eagles found a player they feared would go before No. 4, they could package Foles in a deal for the top pick.ย

Cleveland Browns

Drafting a pass-rusher feels like a natural fit for the Browns in the first round, but there are several teamsโ€”Jacksonville, Oakland, Philadelphia and Detroitโ€”that have similar needs. If the Browns fall in love with a pass-rusher and want to secure his services, jumping ahead of the other needy teams makes sense.
