Tennessee Titans: What George Wilson Will Bring to the Struggling Defense

Chad MintonFeb 22, 2013

It didn't take long for the Tennessee Titans to make their first big move of free agency, and it came with the signing of veteran safety George Wilson, according to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean.

This is the first of many steps the Titans need to make to put themselves back into the conversation for an AFC playoff spot.

Wilson will bring veteran stability back to the defense, but the question is how many years of quality football does he have left in the tank? He turns 32 before the start of next season.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network is reporting that the contract will be a two-year, $4 million deal. If that ends up being the case, then the Titans will have plenty of wiggle room to make another big move.

Adding Wilson for such a modest price will also help the Titans hold onto current players that they can't afford to lose—like tight end Jared Cook.

Wilson has a great chance at becoming the on-the-field leader of this defense once he learns the system. He was a team captain during his years with the Bills and has also been an active proponent in the local community.

Adding Wilson should mean that free agent Jordan Babineaux sees his time in Tennessee come to an end, and Wilson will certainly be a major upgrade.

That leaves Wilson and Michael Griffin as a decent combination at safety for the Titans, and that should give the defensive line more time to pressure the quarterback, as the secondary will improve in pass coverage.

Anyone remember the reliability that Chris Hope brought to the strong safety position for the Titans?

You can expect Wilson to bring a similar quality both on and off the field for Tennessee.

Overall, this is a good move for the Titans, and now they can mark off one need on what is a long list of needs for them this offseason.
