Titus Young Reportedly Cut by St. Louis Rams

The St. Louis Rams were the only team to put in a waiver claim for wide receiver Titus Young this offseason. However, Young's time with the franchise appears to be over, as the team reportedly cut him on Friday.

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch broke the news:

Young had been at Rams Park just a couple of days this week — meeting team coaches and officials, taking a physical, etc. Apparently, that was enough for the Rams to decide it wasn’t going to work.

Rams head coach Jeff Fisher provided an explanation for why Young was cut so soon after being acquired, as reported by Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk:

"

We felt like by claiming Titus we would have the opportunity to spend a good deal of time with him...We spent that time with him, we spent probably four or five days with him, and as an organization, at the end of the interview process, you might call it, we felt it was best to go in another direction.

"

This safe response from Fisher doesn't provide much clarity as to whether Young's mercurial personality triggered his release.

More reports have broken on why the Rams released Young, and it may not be for the reason most originally assumed. According to Rams sideline reporter Tony Softli, sources have said that a failed physical may be the reason for his dismissal.

No matter the speculation, it seems we'll get to find that out on Friday when Jeff Fisher addresses the media.

The talented, troubled Young was drafted in the second round of the 2011 draft by the Detroit Lions but was released after causing a stir within the organization. His off-field issues have been well documented, although it is unclear if that was the motivation behind the Rams' decision.

The former Boise State standout was suspended during his sophomore season for getting into a fight with a teammate. That sort of conduct continued in his second season in Detroit when he sucker-punched safety Louis Delmas.

But what happened in the middle of the year was the most bizarre.

According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press (h/t Pro Football Talk), Young lined up in the wrong spot multiple times in a Week 11 loss to the NFC North rival Green Bay Packers, causing commotion and confrontation with receivers coach Shawn Jefferson.

That led to the Lions deactivating Young on Thanksgiving Day. Young apparently acted the way he did because he didn't feel he was being targeted enough by QB Matthew Stafford.

Young never played a down in St. Louis, and considering the lack of interest in him when he became available following the 2012 season, he will likely have a hard time finding a spot on a new NFL team in 2013.
