Money In the Bank: More Than a World Title Shot

Seize The DayApr 7, 2009

Each year the Money in the Bank concept is put into place with the WWE. It's one of the more popular things that the WWE does annually. Ever since making its debut in 2005 though it has become a lot more that just a World Title Shot.

Relevance

The Money in the Bank represents a title shot that can be taken at any particular time throughout the year. Generally speaking, it usually produces a fresh main-eventer who comes off of a high midcard status. Added to that, it creates a ton of anticipation and opportunities for deserving superstars. Thus showing its relevance in the WWE.

It can also be held responsible for the sharp rise in talent for midcarders heading into Wrestlemania. What some people don't see though is the fact that it can be played as an alternative for a feud. The match consists of eight men, all of which are actively competing. Add a bit of storytelling, some hype, and mix in some entertainment and you have a liable Wrestlemania attraction.

The Hype

After granting a Money in the Bank winner many fans presume a time and place that the winner will cash in the briefcase in exchange for a World Title shot. That however is extremely hard to predict as it can come out of absolutely nowhere.

As I said a bit earlier in the article, the winner becomes a draw-in. We look at CM Punk now as a strong midcard superstar now, but he can be an ECW Champion tomorrow, or maybe even a WWE Champion on Friday. Looking back at last night's Raw, he could have easily cashed in right after his match. Several examples showing why the Money in the Bank basically equals hype/anticipation.

A Good Excuse

There are a ton of fans who don't seem to notice this, but the Money in the Bank brings a good excuse to push a midcard superstar. It brings a good excuse to throw eight men into a huge feud and create a five-star match at Wrestlemania. It's also a good excuse to provide additional hype to such events like Wrestlemania, or the draft lottery.

It basically gives a reason for some of the moves that are currently being made, to be made.

Closing Thoughts

Throughout the article I may have said things that were notably obvious. The fact is though that majority of wrestling fans don't see the benefits of Money in the Bank. I may be stating the obvious or recognizing an extremely effective business move. Either way, Money in the Bank brings a hell of a lot more than just a simple World Title Shot.
