New York Yankee Fans Should Not Be Nervous...Right?

Matt ResnickApr 7, 2009

Of course, New York Yankees fans should not be worried. There are 161 more games to go. It's a marathon, people, not a sprint. After all, the only great thing that was built in a day was Kelly LeBrock's character in Weird Science, right?

I am referring to the opening day nightmare that all Yankee fans experienced yesterday. With two of their three new star signings on display, the 2009 Yankees resembled a lot of what 2008 looked like...inept starting pitching and no clutch hitting. Only the culprits this time were Big Tex and CC.

The two main guys that were and are supposed to erase '08's embarrassment and bring home No. 27. A 10-5 drubbing by the O's will make any Yankee fan shudder, especially with such hope for the season.

But let's be real. If the season ended today, I would be nervous. Since it doesn't, I feel great (well, let's say good). I mean, what happened yesterday will probably happen at least 50-60 more times (and hopefully not more). This is part of the game. Pitchers walk batters and give up hits. Hitters leave guys on base in clutch moments. This is just what happens over the course of the season.

Better for it to happen yesterday than in a key game in mid-September. Look, we were all hoping for yesterday to be like the pirate ship scene from "The Goonies," right? Sloth swings in and saves the kids from the Fratelli's and they escape with a sack full of riches to save the town..."There'll be no more signing today or ever again." Tex and CC would play the part of Sloth and save the Yankees from another dark October.

But this dream scene is to be played out over the whole season, not on one soggy afternoon in Baltimore.

Look, CC is not Kenny Rogers...or Denny Neagle...or Kevin Brown...or Javier Vasquez after the All-Star break...this list could go on and on really. Tex is not Danny Tartabull. These guys will perform and perform at a high level. So as the baseball world and Red Sox Nation sit in their holes and celebrates yesterday's loss, let's remember that we, Yankees Universe, will be celebrating in October.

Canyon of Heroes, here we come!
