Baltimore Orioles Defeat the New York Yankees—Natty Bohs All Around

Jarrett CarterApr 6, 2009

The boos for Mark Teixeira were loud and pronounced all game long. The cheers for the much maligned pitching staff were sustained.

The flyover in pregame ceremonies was late. Joe Biden’s pitch was just a bit outside. It didn’t matter.

Baltimore Orioles 10, New York Yankees 5. The Orioles lead the A.L. East.

Despite a dreary day by spring time standards, the Orioles and their fan base came with plenty of energy and a small place to contain all of it. It appeared that the excitement of starting for the Bronx Bombers got the best of CC Sabathia, who didn’t make it out of the fifth inning, after giving up six earned runs and five walks with no strikeouts.

Jeremy Guthrie, whom we all expected to fall apart like a crab cake with so much filler, struck out three and allowed three runs for the win. We thought he was a spring bust, but you’ve got to give it to him—he stood up to the pressure and walked away bruised but unbeaten.

And 10 runs from the Orioles? We knew they had some offensive firepower, but Lord! They ought to be careful before local folks get used to this.

Orioles' magic, for at least a night, is back in Charm City.
