The Road Ahead for Arsenal

Kevin PyeMar 28, 2008

The next 21 days will decide if the young Guns of the Emirates will have a season left with a trio of games against the reds from Mersyside in the space of thirteen days

Arsenal have set the pace all season in the English Premiership with a fabulous flowing passing game that at times has been a joy to watch and the speed and skill of the team has been the envy of all other supporters

However a young squad which is still learning is now starting to feel the strain of no solid depth and is starting to look very jaded with almost a serious injury every game depleting the team.

Points are now given away cheaply and in all reality it is the Champions league that now offers the best chance of silverware. With their great rivals Spurs having thumped Arsenal in the Carling Cup semi final and going on to lift the trophy, puts added pressure onto Wengers princes of football who for the first time in 10 years could give Spurs the bragging rights of North London where trophy's are concerned should they fail in their quest for silverware losing over the two legs to Liverpool. Of course the Liverpool game is just the first hurdle of this competition of the latter stages, with a semi and a final to follow should they be victorius and will need to be completely focused on these games.

However the final run in goes Arsenal barring a disaster are assured of Champions League football for the next campaign but Wenger needs to take note of how lightweight the squad is for next season needing to strengthan the squad in key areas so as not to lose ground to the main competition and certainly to see off the challnge of Spurs, Everton and Villa who seem to be closing in on the big four

Perhaps in hindsight going out of the FA cup and Carling cup with such lacklustre displays will show Wenger that while the season is long all trophy's are there to be won which is how the club are measured at the end of the season, with teams being remembered for sucess and not finishing fourth in the league
