LA Sol 2, Sky Blue FC 0: Marta Brace Paces WPS Leaders

On their first-ever road trip, the Los Angeles Sol took on Sky Blue FC at TD Bank Park.

Fresh off their 2-0 win over the Washington Freedom, they built on their momentum with their first-ever road win with another 2-0 victory.

The leaders in Women's Professional Soccer (WPS), Marta scored her first goals of the contest...as well as drawing the first yellow card for the club.

Early on, the Sol threatened with Marta (full name Marta Vieira da Silva) eluding two defenders in the 19th minute. A slip-up inside the box made it an easy save for Sky Blue goalkeeper Jenny Branam.

In the 42nd minute, Marta delivered an off-balance shot past Branam inside the far post for her first goal in the Sol uniform.

Two minutes later, Chinese international Han Duan fed a cross to the Brazilian Player of the Year to complete her brace.

The Sol were the agressive side all match, with Marta earning a caution in the 49th minute. Los Angeles committed nine fouls compared to Sky Blue's two.

In spite of the Sol's win, the performance had some rust with only four shots out of 12 on target.

But it paled in comparison to Sky Blue having three shots saved by keeper Karina LeBlanc, with 11 missing the target.

Marta was all smiles after the contest.

“I am very happy to have scored my first two goals in WPS,” Marta said. “They were both opportunities that I was glad that I was able take advantage of and give us the win.”

“I was very happy with our performance today,” said Los Angeles Sol manager Abner Rogers. “To come back and play a very different style than we had to last week and still come up with the result we did pleases me a great deal.”

Los Angeles will have the weekend off before returning to Home Depot Center to face FC Gold Pride at 3:00PM EST on April 19. FC Gold Pride is also Sky Blue's next opponent, with the match scheduled for April 11, 2009 at 12:00PM EST.
