Tottenham: 5 Players Spurs Could Target on January Transfer Deadline Day

Joe TanseyJun 1, 2018

If there is one club you must keep your eye on during the final 24 hours of the transfer window, it is Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs have always found a way to surprise fans and pundits alike with a surprise move to steal the attention away from every other club in the EPL.

Over the summer, it was Clint Dempsey who Tottenham brought in at the last minute out of nowhere.

In recent years, players like Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Wilson Palacios have been signed on deadline day by the North London club.

With all of that being said, it is likely that Spurs will make a move that will surprise us all on deadline day.

Here are five players who could potentially be targeted and signed by Tottenham on deadline day.

Leandro Damiao

Over the past week, Tottenham's injury bug has hit the forward position, with Jermain Defoe going down due to a pelvic injury.

Defoe missed Sunday's FA Cup fourth round loss to Leeds United, but he did return for the club's 1-1 draw at Norwich on Wednesday.

However, if Defoe were to go down with another injury, manager Andre Villas-Boas would need a viable replacement for the England international.

That is where reported target Leandro Damiao comes into the picture.

Damiao has been linked with Spurs in the past and a new link between the two sides came about on Tuesday.

The Independent reported that AVB made one transfer request to chairman Daniel Levy and that request was to bring in Damiao from Internacional

There is a high likelihood of this deal happening, but there are a lot of moving parts to this potential deal, which could be an issue that would keep the deal from happening.

Gary Hooper

Throughout January, Celtic forward Gary Hooper has been linked with Norwich City

Celtic has rejected up to three bids from the Canaries so far, and it looks like Spurs could swoop in and steal Hooper from under the noses of Norwich City (via BBC Sport).

On Wednesday, talkSPORT reported that Tottenham sent scouts to watch the 24-year-old play against Dundee United on Tuesday night.

According to the report, Tottenham are now the favorites to sign Hooper.

The one problem that Spurs could have in capturing the signature of Hooper is the fact that Celtic are holding out for more money from a potential buyer (via the Daily Mail).

Etienne Capoue

One position that manager Andre Villas-Boas could be looking to upgrade on deadline day is the defensive midfield.

AVB is still looking to replace Sandro, who is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Although Lewis Holtby was already brought into the club, he is more of an attack-minded midfielder.

One player who could be a perfect fit in the defensive midfield for Spurs is Etienne Capoue.

Capoue, 24, currently plays for Toulouse in Ligue 1, and he was linked with the North London club over the summer (via Daily Mail)

This season with Toulouse, Capoue has appeared in 20 league matches and has scored four goals.

Alvaro Negredo

Another forward that Tottenham could go after on deadline day is Sevilla's Alvaro Negredo.

Negredo was once again linked with Tottenham this week and his sale could help the current financial problems at Sevilla (via Daily Mail).

This season, Negredo has tallied 14 goals in all competitions for the La Liga club.

As for his recent exploits on the pitch, Negredo scored in Sevilla's match against Granada on Monday night.

Mohamed Diame

5 of 5

In their search for a defensive midfielder, Tottenham have turned to West Ham's Mohamed Diame as a potential replacement for the injured Sandro.

Diame has been linked with Spurs and their North London rival Arsenal over the past week (via Metro).

The 25-year-old has been one of the Hammers' best performers this season, and he may be let go by the London club if the price is right.

If he joins Tottenham, Diame would play alongside Mousa Dembele in the defensive midfield.

A move by Diame to White Hart Lane could free up either Scott Parker or Tom Huddlestone to make a move away from the North London club.
