South Carolina Football Recruiting: Meet All 2013 Commits

Andrew KulhaFeb 4, 2013

The South Carolina Gamecocks look to be in great shape leading up to national signing day.
Steve Spurrier and his staff have put together an impressive class, and South Carolina fans have to be feeling very excited about the future of the football program.

The Gamecocks were able to land a few stars, and overall, this class is very solid. Let's get to know the recruits that will make up South Carolina's 2013 recruiting class.

Note: Information via 247Sports.com, ESPN.com or Scout.com unless otherwise noted. Star rankings according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Jonathan Walton

1 of 21

Height: 6'1''

Weight: 227 lbs.

Position: MLB

Stars: 4-star

High School: Bayside Academy, Daphne, AL

Commit Date: 2/6 National Signing Day

Skai Moore

2 of 21

Height: 6'3''

Weight: 215 lbs.

Position: OLB

Stars: 3-star

High School: University School of Nova South

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: Rutgers, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Arkansas

Commit Date: 2/6 National Signing Day

Analysis:

Skai Moore took an official visit to South Carolina in mid-January, South Carolina doesn't necessarily need another linebacker in this class, but landing his commitment certainly adds to the depth at the position.

Conner Mitch

3 of 21

Height: 6'3''

Weight: 220 lbs.

Position: QB

Stars: 3-star

High School: Wakefield High School (N.C.)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: Auburn, LSU, Alabama

Commit Date: 5/8/12, Enrolled: 1/14/13

Analysis:

Quarterback Conner Shaw will be entering his final year at South Carolina in 2013. Is Conner Mitch the guy who can eventually replace Shaw? That question will have to be answered in time, but for now Mitch can learn the ropes and work on his game. Eventually, he'll get his chance to be the starter. Either way, he's a very important commitment for South Carolina.

D.J. Park

4 of 21

Height: 6'5''

Weight: 313 lbs.

Position: OG

Stars: 4-star

High School: Dillon High School (S.C)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: LSU, Auburn, Clemson, Alabama

Commit Date: 1/14/12, Enrolled: 1/14/13

Analysis:

At 6''5'', 313 pounds, Park has incredible potential. He's a big-time recruiting pickup for South Carolina and will play a major role in time. A.J. Cann and Ronald Patrick are holding down the guard positions right now, but Park will be a very good backup. He could push for a starting role in Year 2.

Ronnie Martin

5 of 21

Height: 5'10''

Weight: 185 lbs.

Position: CB

Stars: 3-star

School: Georgia Military College, Spartanburg High School (S.C.)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: N/A

Commit Date: 7/27/12, Enrolled: 1/14/13

Analysis:

Ronnie Martin is a junior college commit, and he'll be an important depth player right away for South Carolina. He'll have a bit more experience than the rest of the true freshmen coming in, and the fact that he's enrolled early will help him as well. His added experience and time with the team may set him apart.

Larenz Bryant

6 of 21

Height: 6'1''

Weight: 213 lbs.

Position: OLB

Stars: 4-star

High School: Zebulon B. Vance High School (N.C.)

Senior Stats: 76 TCK, 9 SCK, 1 INT, 1 FF, 2 FR

Other Finalists: Alabama, Clemson

Commit Date: 6/25/12

Analysis:

Larenz Bryant is a star linebacker recruit, and he's easily one of the marquee players in South Carolina's 2013 class. He's going to be very good on the edges and in open space because of his speed. He runs a 4.43 40 according to 247Sports, and that's incredible considering he's 6'1'' and 213 pounds.  South Carolina is losing a lot of depth at linebacker. Bryant can come in right away and play a role.

Kelsey Griffin

7 of 21

Height: 6'2''

Weight: 290 lbs.

Position: DT

Stars: 4-star

High School: Mill Creek High School (Ga.)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: Georgia

Commit Date: 10/10/12

Analysis:

Kelsey Griffin has incredible potential, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the rotation early on, especially in obvious passing downs. Griffin has good size, but what sets him apart is his speed. He runs a 4.70 40 according to 247Sports, which is legitimately elite for a defensive tackle.

David Williams

8 of 21

Height: 6'0.5''

Weight: 195 lbs.

Position: RB

Stars: 4-star

High School: Imhotep Charter High School (Pa.)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: Penn State, Miami

Commit Date: 1/4/13

Analysis:

Williams is one of the most important commitments in this class. He's the No. 8-ranked all purpose back in the country according to the 247Sports composite rankings. With Marcus Lattimore heading to the NFL, Mike Davis should get the starting nod, and then it's essentially a competition for No. 2. Williams can at least compete for the backup gig, and if not, he'll be a great addition to the depth chart in Year 1. Either way, his future is very bright.

Devin Washington

9 of 21

Height: 6'3''

Weight: 225 lbs.

Position: WDE

Stars: 3-star

High School: Jones High School (Fla.)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: Georgia Tech, N.C. State, Duke

Commit Date: 5/10/12

Analysis:

In Washington, South Carolina is getting a player with good size and very good speed. He runs a 4.60 40 according to 247Sports. Jadeveon Clowney is going to take up one defensive end spot, but Washington could very well compete for the spot across the line from him because of his speed. When Clowney moves on to he NFL, Washington may be the guy to replace him.

Na'Ty Rodgers

10 of 21

Height: 6'5''

Weight: 270 lbs.

Position: OT

Stars: 3-star

High School: McDonough High School (Pomfret, Md.)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: Maryland, Oklahoma

Commit Date: 1/21/13

Analysis:

Na'Ty Rodgers was one of the marquee linemen recruits from the 2013 class, so he's a notable recruiting win for South Carolina. He can play either guard or tackle, so he's very versatile, and that's a great trait to have as a lineman. He'll add some major depth at both positions right away.

Pharoh Cooper

11 of 21

Height: 5'11''

Weight: 181 lbs.

Position: ATH/WR

Stars: 3-star

High School: Havelock High School (N.C.)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: North Carolina

Commit Date: 5/10/12

Analysis:

Pharoh Cooper has the potential to be a game-changer for South Carolina, so the Gamecocks are going to have to find ways to get him the football. He's not extremely big, but he's very athletic, and he can make plays. He can be a very important special teams player right away for South Carolina, and in time he'll work his way into the offense.

Bryce King

12 of 21

Height: 6'3''

Weight: 293 lbs.

Position: C

Stars: 3-star

High School: Dillon High School (S.C.)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: Tennessee, Clemson

Commit Date: 4/14/12

Analysis:

Redshirt freshman Cody Waldrop and incoming sophomore Clayton Stadnik should compete for the starting center spot next season, which would leave King on the outside looking in. South Carolina may want to use a redshirt on King to create some separation between himself and the other centers on the roster.

David Johnson

13 of 21

Height: 6'1''

Weight: 253 lbs.

Position: WDE

Stars: 3-star

High School: Lithonia High School (Ga.)

Senior Stats: 109 TCK, 20 TFL, 11 SCK, 1 INT, 1 FF, 1 FR

Other Finalists: Vanderbilt, N.C. State

Commit Date: 5/10/12

Analysis:

Johnson is only a 3-star recruit, but he has a ton of potential. He's a bit undersized height-wise, but he runs a 4.70 40 (247Sports), which is very good for his size. He could be an effective option as a pass-rusher, and he'll also be a good special teams player. Johnson may also be a good redshirt candidate.

Devante Covington

14 of 21

Height: 6'3''

Weight: 210 lbs.

Position: WDE

Stars: 3-star

High School: Richmond Senior High School (N.C.)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: East Carolina

Commit Date: 4/30/12

Analysis:

South Carolina will not have a depth problem at defensive end, and Covington will be a big reason why. He has great measurables at 6'3'', 210 pounds, and he runs a 4.70 40 (247Sports). He's a player who can work himself into the rotation in a season or two, and he'll be very effective.

Ali Groves

15 of 21

Height: 5'11''

Weight: 177 lbs.

Position: S

Stars: 3-star

High School: Stephenson High School (Ga.)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: Auburn, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech

Commit Date: 5/29/12

Analysis:

With D.J. Swearinger heading to the NFL, there's going to be a void to fill on South Carolina's depth chart. Groves may not be able to come in and start right away, but he'll be high on the depth chart, and in time he can compete for some playing time in South Carolina's secondary.

Alan Knott

16 of 21

Height: 6'4''

Weight: 275 lbs.

Position: OG

Stars: 3-star

High School: Sandy Creek High School (GA)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: North Carolina, Virginia Tech

Commit Date: 6/10/12

Analysis:

Knott has a ton of potential at 6'4'', 275 pounds. He's a big-time Georgia commitment for South Carolina and he could end up working his way up to a starting spot in the next few seasons. He has pretty good height, so he can also play tackle if needed in a backup role. Either way, look for Knott to be an important player on the offensive line in the next few years.

Jamari Smith

17 of 21

Height: 5'10''

Weight: 195 lbs.

Position: RB

Stars: 3-star

High School: Fletcher Senior High School (Fla.)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: Florida State, Florida, North Carolina,

Commit Date: 7/15/12

Analysis:

Jamari Smith has good size at 5'10'', 195 pounds, and he's the No. 14 all-purpose back in the 2013 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. David Williams is the feature back from this class, but don't count out Smith. He could end up being a very valuable No. 2 back for South Carolina. He's also an important Florida recruit for the Gamecocks.

Gerald Turner

18 of 21

Height: 6'1''

Weight: 240 lbs.

Position: ILB

Stars: 3-star

High School: Goose Creek High School (S.C.)

Senior Stats: 93 TCK, 19 TFL, 8 SCK, 1 INT, 2 FF, 1 FR, 1FRTD

Other Finalists: North Carolina

Commit Date: 3/31/12

Analysis:

Turner is a big-time in-state recruit for South Carolina. He's ranked as the No. 9 player from the state, according to the 247Sports Composite. He had a very productive senior year, and he does come in with great size for an inside linebacker. Keep your eye on Turner, he could end up playing well above his 3-star ranking.

J.P. Vonashek

19 of 21

Height: 6'7''

Weight: 275 lbs.

Position: OT

Stars: 3-star

High School: Camden County High School (Ga.)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: Michigan State, Ohio State, Auburn, Florida State

Commit Date: 6/9/12

Analysis:

Landing J.P. Vonashek's commitment was huge for South Carolina. He has incredible potential at 6'7'', 275 pounds, and he could very well become a big-time starter for the Gamecocks in the future. He'll need some time and coaching, but in a few years he could be a great player.

Jasper Sasser

20 of 21

Height: 6'2''

Weight: 185 lbs.

Position: ATH/WR

Stars: 3-star

High School: Wolfson High School (Fla.)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: UCF

Commit Date: 4/14/12

Analysis:

Sasser is a recruit who will be able to do a lot of things on the football field, so South Carolina will have its options open with him. He's officially listed as an athlete, but he can play safety or wide receiver. His size and versatility make him a great commitment for the Gamecocks.

Mohamed Camara

21 of 21

Height: 6'2''

Weight: 205 lbs.

Position: OLB

Stars: 3-star

High School: West Forsyth High School (GA)

Senior Stats: N/A

Other Finalists: Southern Miss, UCF

Commit Date: 4/27/12

Analysis:

Camara is another player whom I would consider to have versatile measurables. At 6'2'', 205 he's a bit small to play linebacker consistently in the SEC, though he is ranked as one. He can also play safety, and that may end up being his best fit. He runs a 4.65 40, so he's more than fast enough to patrol the secondary. He could also be utilized as the "spur" in South Carolina's defense.
