Kaepernicking Trademark Is Great Business Move for 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick

First it was Tebowing, now it is Kaepernicking. 

Whenever an athlete (especially an NFL player) strikes a pose after a spectacular play, it is natural to assign a name to it. In this process, it only makes sense that the athlete would want to trademark it. 

That is exactly what San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick did now that the world has latched on to his "Kaepernicking" pose that he showed off after scoring a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC divisional round, a game in which Kaepernick set a quarterback-record with 181 rushing yards. 

According to Darren Rovell of ESPN, Kaepernick has filed the paperwork with the proper authorities to trademark his signature pose to be used for merchandise and marketing purposes. 

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website shows the registration was filed on Jan. 14, and Kaepernick intends to use it on clothing, specifically T-shirts.

Kaepernick's marketing team already has authorized a few small T-shirt companies to use his name and image on their products.

Had the 49ers been eliminated from the postseason in the NFC Championship Game, this would have still been a smart move by Kaepernick. It is clear that what he has done on the field since taking over as starting quarterback for this team has struck a chord with football fans. 

However, the fact that the 49ers are playing in the Super Bowl, with Kaepernick being one of the key reasons for that success, only makes this move look that much better for him. 

If the 49ers are able to win the Super Bowl and Kaepernick plays great in the game, his star is going to be brighter than it has ever been. His face will be all over the place on commercials, magazines, television and radio interviews, etc. 

With all of those marketing and publicity opportunities just waiting out there for Kaepernick, now is the time to capitalize on the popularity. 

The movement actually got started before the postseason began, as a YouTube rap video with a five-year-old singing about how Kaepernick was going to take the 49ers to the Super Bowl and go to the Hall of Fame. 

While it is a little early to start erecting the bust for Canton, it is a testament to the budding popularity of Kaepernick that he already has rap videos about him with nearly 600,000 views.

Fans and the media can quickly turn a local trend into a worldwide obsession. To say that Tebow played sparingly with the Jets is an understatement, as he did not start any games or record any touchdowns. But he is still the most popular player in the NFL in part because of the Tebowing craze that took over the football world last year.

Kaepernick does have one big advantage over Tebow that should help him long term: He's already a very accurate passer at the NFL level.
