Seattle Seahawks Reportedly Willing to Trade QB Matt Flynn

Brian LeighJun 7, 2018

The Seattle Seahawks handed Matt Flynn a three-year, $26 million deal last offseason, hoping that he would become the quarterback of their future. One season and zero starts later, he appears to be on his way out of town.

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports had the scoop:

"

While Seattle has told QB Matt Flynn they are willing to trade him, finding trade partner is problematic because several expect he'll be cut

Flynn earned that gaudy contract on the strength of his excellent play in limited time with the Green Bay Packers. Despite starting only twice in four years, Flynn's Packer career ended with a 62.1 completion percentage, over 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns.

The highlight of that brief tenure came in Week 17, 2011, when Flynn started in Aaron Rodgers' place against the Detroit Lions. He looked every bit the part of a starting QB that afternoon, finishing with 480 yards and six touchdowns on 31-of-44 passing.

After signing that mega-contract, Flynn was the tentative favorite to start for the Seahawks in 2012. But he was outplayed in training camp by third-round rookie Russell Wilson, who then proceeded to have a breakout year for the surprising, 11-5 ballclub. With Wilson firmly entrenched as Seattle's QB of the future, Flynn and his prohibitive contract became very expendable.

Even though he never got a shot to start in Seattle, Flynn might get another chance as early as 2013. Numerous teams are tentatively in the market for a new quarterback, including the Chiefs, Jets, Cardinals, Bills, Eagles and Browns. There isn't a consensus first-year starter in the upcoming draft, either, making this an even better time to be a free-agent quarterback.

It's not the ending Matt Flynn envisioned when he came to Seattle, but given the outlook of this summer, parting ways with the team might be a blessing in disguise for his career.
