LA Clippers: Keys to a 2nd-Half Playoff Push
There’s no denying that the LA Clippers have become the team of LA.
With the Lakers on a downward slope, the Clippers are becoming one of the teams to beat in not only the West, but the entire NBA.
Certainly, the Clippers have seen great improvement from last season, but there are several keys to look out for as the Clippers make their final push toward the playoff season.
Chris Paul
1 of 5There is no doubt that Chris Paul has created a new element for this team.
His energy has really brought this team back to life.
However, after coming off of a knee injury, Paul hasn’t been able to perform as usual. Against Golden State, he was only 1-of-7 shooting, something incredibly rare for the PG. While his injury is on a day-to-day basis, it will be interesting to see how quickly he will be able to bounce back.
As far as the playoffs are concerned, Chris Paul will be a threat if he is healthy. If Paul can get back to his usual tenacity, then the Clippers will be able to have that extra edge to make the playoffs.
The Looming Road Trip
2 of 5Starting February 1, the Clippers will be taking on seven opponents in a row outside of The Staples Center, two of which include Miami and New York.
This will be the Clippers' longest stretch of road games all season and the most challenging stretch that they'll endure as well.
It may show tell-tale signs of how they will be able to adjust in the playoffs.
As of now, they have a 13-6 road record. That record will be tested when February begins.
Clipper fans should watch closely as they tackle this challenge.
Blake Griffin
3 of 5You certainly have to watch out for Blake Griffin.
As one of the fundamental impact players on this team, his one job is to stay healthy.
You can’t ask for anything more.
Griffin has the ability to run right over you in the paint as many teams can attest to. He’s one of the best young players in the NBA right now and will be key for the Clippers’ success in the postseason.
As long as Griffin remains healthy, there should not be any doubt that he will continue to be just as lethal as he has been. His efficiency will be imperative for the rest of the regular season.
Staying at the Top
4 of 5Currently, the Clippers hold the No. 2 spot in the Western Conference, right behind Oklahoma City.
However, San Antonio is not too far behind, threatening to take down the Clippers.
The Clippers will need to hold onto their spot tightly as they try to make a statement in the upcoming playoff season. Getting to a 50-win season, which has not been seen in years, would be monumental for the Clippers.
With earning the top spot comes a huge target, and teams will be looking to take down the Clippers.
This will be a true test as the season continues: The Clippers' ability to remain focused and continue to win games.
The Competition
5 of 5The Clippers have become one of the best teams in the league.
Obviously, the other teams and their performance will be key for the Clippers making a push for the playoffs during the latter half of the season.
Oklahoma City is the biggest threat.
Durant and Westbrook seem to be unstoppable. Durant, in particular, continues to score relentlessly.
The Clippers have no opportunity to slip up.
The Clippers have a long and difficult road ahead. With a tough schedule and nagging injuries, these factors and others will be watched closely as they continue to power through the rest of the season.
In what will be a defining moment for the entire team, the Clippers are in a position to make a real statement now and in the postseason.
