MLB Power Rankings: Is Your Team's Offseason Overrated or Underrated? Part 2
On Thursday, we looked at the offseason moves of the lower-ranked MLB teams and contrasted our rankings with how fans may have placed them, based on web feedback.
In Part 2, we'll rank the top 15 MLB teams.
Based on comments seen on the Internet, we will also determine whether those comments overrate or underrate each team's offseason ranking.
Feedback will come from a variety of sources, including comments from each team's fan forum on MLB.com.
Let's take a look.
Note: All offseason transactions courtesy of MLB Depth Charts.
15. Seattle Mariners
1 of 15Arrivals
1B Kendrys Morales - Trade (LAA)
1B/OF Michael Morse - Trade (WAS)
OF Jason Bay - Free Agent (NYM)
OF Scott Cousins - Waivers (TOR)
OF Raul Ibaรฑez - Free Agent (NYY)
Departures
C John Jaso - Trade (OAK)
OF Scott Cousins - Waivers (LAA)
LHP Mauricio Robles - Waivers (PHI)
LHP George Sherrill - Free Agent (KC)
LHP Jason Vargas - Trade (LAA)
Earlier this week, the Mariners would have been in the bottom half of this listโthe addition of Morse certainly changed their offseason.
Whether it changed for the better is up for debate.
Is This Ranking Overrated or Underrated?
Based on web feedback, way overrated.
David Schoenfield of ESPN.com believes the Mariners struck out with the Morse deal and that general manager Jack Zduriencik's job could be in jeopardy.
Fans believe that giving up three years of Jaso for one year of Morseโin terms of team controlโwas a bad idea. Other forums aren't sold on the idea, either.
14. Atlanta Braves
2 of 15Arrivals
C Gerald Laird - Free Agent (DET)
IF Ramiro Peรฑa - Free Agent (NYY)
OF Jordan Schafer - Waivers (HOU)
OF B.J. Upton - Free Agent (TB)
RHP David Carpenter - Waivers (BOS)
RHP Jordan Walden - Trade (LAA)
Departures
C David Ross - Free Agent (BOS)
1B/OF Eric Hinske - Free Agent (ARI)
RHP Tommy Hanson - Trade (LAA)
RHP Peter Moylan - Free Agent (LAD)
The big offseason prize for the Atlanta Braves was the five-year deal given to Upton, replacing Michael Bourn in center field. Gerald Laird will take over for David Ross as the backup catcher and will see plenty of playing time early if Brian McCann's shoulder isn't ready to go.
Is This Ranking Overrated or Underrated?
A bit underrated.
Braves fans in forums expressed some concern about a possible platoon situation at left field and third base with Martin Prado, Juan Francisco and Reed Johnson. Braves' management is comfortable heading to spring training with the group they have now.
However, given what the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals have done this offseason, was it anywhere near enough?
13. Cleveland Indians
3 of 15Arrivals

LHP Scott Maine - Waivers (TOR)
LHP T.J. McFarland - Rule 5 (BAL)
LHP Tony Sipp - Trade (ARI)
A major roster overhaul has taken place in Cleveland. General manager Chris Antonetti has certainly been active in attempting to remake a roster that lost 94 games last season.
Brett Myers will move back to the starting rotation for the Tribe, and newcomer Trevor Bauer will look to crack the rotation during spring training as well. Considering the rest of the rotation, that might not take much.
Is This Ranking Overrated or Underrated?
Judging from the Indians' forum on MLB.com, way underrated.
Comments have been glowing concerning the roster changes thus far. However, the Indians still don't have an ace at the top of the rotation. Ubaldo Jimenez and Justin Masterson are coming off massively disappointing seasons and Zach McAllister has exactly 26 games of experience.
ESPN.com's Jim Bowden is of the belief that the Indians could end up being hurt by the Swisher signing if they don't deal him before the end of the 2014 season.
The Indians absolutely deserve credit for making changes. Whether those changes yield the results they're seeking remains to be seen.
12. Boston Red Sox

RHP Zach Stewart - Trade (PIT)
With the news on Thursday that the Red Sox and Mike Napoli finally came to agreement on a one-year deal loaded with incentives, their offseason got just a wee bit better.
With the new deal, the overall risk to the Red Sox was minimized with Napoli taking a one-year deal with no option of any kind. If he stays healthy, he can still earn up to $13 million, the average annual value of his original three-year agreement.
Hanrahan and Uehara help to bolster the bullpen, and Gomes and Victorino will lend a helping hand in the outfield.
Is This Ranking Overrated or Underrated?
It's very close. Local media reaction appears to be very mixed. Kirk Minihane of WEEI.com completely blasted their offseason, while Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald was more than OK with the Sox offering shorter-term deals to help bridge the gap to developing prospects.
Forums are mixed as well. Fans like the short-term contracts, but aren't totally convinced the players attached to those contracts were the right ones to acquire. Fans show concern with Dempster's not-so-stellar numbers against American League competition as well.
Much of the Red Sox's success in 2013 will be tied to their starting rotation. The belief is that the return of John Farrell will be of great benefit to Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz. John Lackey's successful return from Tommy John surgery factors in as well.
11. Tampa Bay Rays
5 of 15Arrivals
1B/2B Vince Belnome - Trade (SD)
1B James Loney - Free Agent (BOS)
3B Patrick Leonard - Trade (KC)
SS Yunel Escobar - Trade (MIA)
OF Raul Mondesi, Jr. - Trade (MIL)
OF Wil Myers - Trade (KC)
LHP Mike Montgomery - Trade (KC)

LHP J.P. Howell - Free Agent (LAD)
LHP Braulio Lara - Rule 5 (MIA)
LHP Kyle Lobstein - Rule 5 (NYM)
LHP Chris Rearick - Trade (SD)
The Rays lost two key contributors to their pitching staff in Shields and Davis, but they picked up four prospects in return, two of whom could impact the Rays in 2013 (Myers, Odorizzi).
Is This Ranking Overrated or Underrated?
A bit overrated. Fans still have concerns about the offense, particularly at first base and designated hitter.
10. Los Angeles Angels
6 of 15Arrivals
IF Tommy Field - Waivers (MIN)
OF Scott Cousins - Waivers (SEA)
OF Josh Hamilton - Free Agent (TEX)
RHP Joe Blanton - Free Agent (LAD)
RHP Tommy Hanson - Trade (ATL)
RHP Ryan Madson - Free Agent (CIN)
LHP Sean Burnett - Free Agent (WAS)
LHP Brandon Sisk - Trade (KC)
LHP Jason Vargas - Trade (SEA)
Departures
C Bobby Wilson - Waivers (TOR)
1B Kendrys Morales - Trade (SEA)
IF Maicer Izturis - Free Agent (TOR)
IF Angel Sanchez - Rule 5 (CWS)
OF Torii Hunter - Free Agent (DET)
RHP Zack Greinke - Free Agent (LAD)
RHP Dan Haren - Free Agent (WAS)
RHP Ervin Santana - Trade (KC)
RHP Jordan Walden - Trade (ATL)
The signing of Hamilton gives the Angels an offense that could indeed be explosive. The loss of Greinke, Haren and Santana was offset by the additions of Blanton, Hanson and Vargas. That's where the success of the Angels' offseason lies.
Is This Ranking Overrated or Underrated?
Likely a bit underrated. Fans are very happy with the additions made to the bullpen (Burnett, Madson) and with Hamilton hitting in the middle of the order.
Concerns include the starting pitching, including the health of Jered Weaver's shoulder. The length of Hamilton's deal is also an issue, and whether he can improve his plate discipline and contact rate.
9. Oakland Athletics
7 of 15Arrivals
C John Jaso - Trade (SEA)
3B Jefry Marte - Trade (NYM)
SS Hiroyuki Nakajima - Free Agent (Japan)
IF Andy Parrino - Trade (SD)

IF Yordy Cabrera - Trade (MIA via ARI)
IF Brandon Hicks - Trade (NYM)
OF Collin Cowgill - Trade (NYM)
OF Jonny Gomes - Free Agent (BOS)
OF Cliff Pennington - Trade (ARI)
RHP A.J. Cole - Trade (WAS)
RHP Graham Godfrey - Trade (BOS)
RHP Brandon McCarthy - Free Agent (ARI)
RHP Jim Miller - Waivers (NYY)
RHP Sandy Rosario - Waivers (BOS)
RHP Tyson Ross - Trade (SD)
RHP Zach Thornton - Trade (PIT)
RHP Blake Treinen - Trade (WAS)
The A's bolstered their catching corps with the acquisition of Jaso on Wednesday. It gives Derek Norris more time to develop and gives the A's a solid bat against left-handed pitching.
The other big move of the offseason was acquiring shortstop Nakajima. He is a career .310 hitter with a .385 on-base percentage in Japanโhow that translates to MLB is obviously up for debate.
Is This Ranking Overrated or Underrated?
Likely a bit overrated. While fans are generally happy with the Jaso deal, they're still not enamored with the lack of financial commitment made by ownership to build on the success of last season.
8. St. Louis Cardinals
8 of 15Arrivals
SS/2B Jake Lemmerman - Trade (LAD)
IF/OF Ty Wigginton - Free Agent (PHI)
LHP Randy Choate - Free Agent (LAD)
Departures
1B Lance Berkman - Free Agent (TEX)
2B/OF Skip Schumaker - Trade (LAD)
The Cardinals entered the offseason with a very short wish list, and they took care of one important need with the acquisition of another lefty reliever in Choate. Wigginton gives the Cards extra depth and versatility on the bench as well.
Is This Ranking Overrated or Underrated?
Very close. Many Cardinals fans agree that just minor tweaking was needed. The potential of Trevor Rosenthal, Joe Kelly and Shelby Miller certainly helped minimize the loss of Lohse on the pitching staff.
The Cards are a perfect example of a team not needing to accomplish much in order to have a successful offseason.
7. San Francisco Giants
9 of 15Arrivals
OF Andres Torres - Free Agent (NYM)
RHP Sandy Rosario - Waivers (CHC)
Departures
C Eli Whiteside - Waivers (NYY)
1B/OF Xavier Nady - Free Agent (KC)
OF Melky Cabrera - Free Agent (TOR)
Going by the arrivals and departures, the Giants didn't do much this offseason. They concentrated on keeping star players from last year's World Series-winning team instead.
Is This Ranking Overrated or Underrated?
Very close.
General manager Brian Sabean's goal this offseason was to keep his championship team intact. He certainly succeeded. Fans generally seem to be on board with his objectives.
6. Cincinnati Reds
10 of 15Arrivals
3B/1B Jack Hannahan - Free Agent (CLE)
IF Jason Donald - Trade (CLE)
OF Shin-Soo Choo - Trade (CLE)
SS Cesar Izturis - Free Agent (WAS)
Departures
C Dioner Navarro - Free Agent (CHC)
SS Didi Gregorius - Trade (CLE)
OF Drew Stubbs - Trade (CLE)
RHP Ryan Madson - Free Agent (LAA)
The Reds acquired the bat they wanted at the top of their batting order with Choo, giving up on Stubbs in the process.
Re-signing Jonathan Broxton allows the Reds to transition Aroldis Chapman to the starting rotation.
Is This Ranking Overrated or Underrated?
Very close.
Much of what the Reds were able to accomplish this offseason was due to the financial creativity orchestrated by assistant general manager Bob Miller.
Miller structured deals that had minimal financial impact on the 2013 payroll and allowed the team the flexibility to go after Choo.
Fans would like to see the Reds add an inexpensive starter as insurance. Concerns about whether the entire Reds rotation can stay healthy for a full season again was cited as the main reason.
5. Los Angeles Dodgers
11 of 15Arrivals
2B/OF Skip Schumaker - Trade (STL)
RHP Zack Greinke - Free Agent (LAA)
LHP J.P. Howell - Free Agent (TB)
LHP Rob Rasmussen - Trade (HOU)
LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu - Free Agent (S. Korea)

1B/OF Jerry Sands - Trade (BOS)
SS/2B Jake Lemmerman - Trade (STL)
OF Alfredo Silverio - Rule 5 (MIA)
OF Shane Victorino - Free Agent (BOS)
RHP Joe Blanton - Free Agent (LAA)
RHP Rubby De La Rosa - Trade (BOS)
RHP John Ely - Trade (HOU)
LHP Randy Choate - Free Agent (STL)
On paper, the Dodgers look scary. And they are leading MLB into uncharted territory in terms of payroll.
Is This Ranking Overrated or Underrated?
Likely overrated.
As we've seen in recent years, spending doesn't always equate to winning championships. That certainly hasn't deterred the Dodgers.
Fans' expectations are absolutely tied to what the Dodgers have spent. Anything less than a World Series title will be a failure in their eyes.
Fans will also point to the moves made prior to the offseason as a part of the overhaul. So the moves made since last July will all be included in those expectations.
4. Detroit Tigers
12 of 15Arrivals
C Ramon Cabrera - Trade (PIT)
2B Jeff Kobernus - Trade (BOS)
IF Gustavo Nuรฑez - Rule 5 Return (ARI)
OF Torii Hunter - Free Agent (DET)
LHP Kyle Lobstein - Trade (NYM)
Departures
C Gerald Laird - Free Agent (ATL)
IF/OF Justin Henry - Trade (BOS)
RHP Marcelo Carreno - Trade (CHC)
LHP Andy Oliver - Trade (PIT)
LHP Daniel Schlereth - Free Agent (BAL)
The signings of Hunter and starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez highlighted the Tigers' offseason thus far. More moves could be made, if recent speculation concerning Rick Porcello is to be believed.
Is This Ranking Overrated or Underrated?
Very close.
The overall sense was that the Tigers took care of two needs with quality signings. Sanchez may have been a bit of an overpay. But with Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer and Doug Fister, he gives Detroit a formidable top four in the rotation.
Hunter in right field with Jackson in center is a terrific fit. Jackson will benefit from Hunter's tutelage and the Tigers' offense will benefit from Hunter's presence as well.
3. Philadelphia Phillies
13 of 15Arrivals
3B Michael Young - Trade (TEX)
OF Ender Inciarte - Rule 5 (ARI)
OF Ben Revere - Trade (MIN)
RHP Mike Adams - Free Agent (TEX)
LHP John Lannan - Free Agent (WAS)

RHP David Herndon - Waivers (TOR)
RHP Josh Lindblom - Trade (TEX)
RHP Trevor May - Trade (MIN)
RHP Vance Worley - Trade (MIN)
Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. earned his paycheck this offseason.
Facing payroll constraints, Amaro managed to make major upgrades without spending much in the process. Revere is under team control for the next five years. The Rangers are paying $10 of Young's $16 million salary for 2013. And the additions of Adams and Lannan cost just $8.5 million next season.
Is This Ranking Overrated or Underrated According to Web Feedback?
Possibly a bit overrated.
Fans still have concerns about the corner outfield positions. The Phillies will likely go to spring training with the quartet of Darin Ruf, John Mayberry Jr., Domonic Brown and Laynce Nix competing for playing time.
2. Washington Nationals
14 of 15Arrivals
OF Denard Span - Trade (MIN)
RHP A.J. Cole - Trade (OAK)
RHP Dan Haren - Free Agent (LAA)
RHP Brad Meyers - Rule 5 Return (NYY)
RHP Rafael Soriano - Free Agent (NYY)
RHP Blake Treinen - Trade (OAK)

2B Jeff Kobernus - Rule 5 (BOS)
RHP Edwin Jackson - Free Agent (CHC)
RHP Alex Meyer - Trade (MIN)
LHP Sean Burnett - Free Agent (LAA)
LHP Mike Gonzalez - Free Agent (MIL)
LHP Tom Gorzelanny - Free Agent (MIL)
LHP John Lannan - Free Agent (PHI)
LHP Daniel Rosenbaum - Rule 5 (COL)
The Nationals made a statement with their acquisition of closer Soriano. They are clearly in win-now mode.
With Soriano in the fold, it gives general manager Mike Rizzo even more options as well. Both Drew Storen and Tyler Clippard will be Soriano's setup men, and Rizzo could opt to trade either one of them.
Is This Ranking Overrated or Underrated?
Neither.
No question this was a winning offseason for Rizzo and the Nationals. They got the center fielder they wanted in Span and kept Adam LaRoche in the fold. They relieved the logjam in the outfield with the trade of Morse and got back Cole, the pitching prospect who they originally and reluctantly dealt last year for Gio Gonzalez.
Now, Soriano gives them a bullpen that's just downright nasty.
What's not to like?

The Blue Jays are this year's baseball version of "Extreme Makeover.''
And you likely won't find too many fans complaining one iota.
Is This Ranking Overrated or Underrated?
The Blue Jays won this offseasonโnot just in the eyes of fans, but in the eyes of Las Vegas as well.
Vegas has the Jays' odds of winning the World Series at 10-1, compared with 35-1 a year ago.
They may have sacrificed a good part of their future, but if they're playing October baseball, it will have been worth it in the end.
