Bob Sheppard Retires

Kevin RozellApr 1, 2009

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

According to the New York Times, Yankees PA Announcer, Bob Sheppard, will be retiring. This comes as sad news to many fans—including me. We all thought he was getting better, and that he was going to resume his role behind the mic at the new ballpark.

The man is 98-years-old, so it is understandable. There is no replacement for Sheppard as of now, but Jim Hall won’t be the guy. Paul Olden will fill in for the two exhibition games this weekend.

Behind the mic at Yankee Stadium since 1955—wow. What an amazing career he had. He definitely left his mark with the Yankees, and I’m sure he will never be forgotten. I listened to this guy my whole life, and so did many other generations of Yankees fans.

It will never be the same. Here is a tribute I made on Mr. Sheppard’s career not too long ago.

"

“I think Bob just wants to take it easy and no longer have the pressure of, ‘Can he? Will he? Or won’t he?’” Doherty said in an e-mail message. “And, at 98, who can blame him?”

“I’m happy to say that Bob is still doing well enough to drive a car,” Doherty said. “He picked his son up at the train this past weekend.”

“Now on to him seeing his 100th birthday in a year and a half,” Doherty said.
