Bob Sheppard Retires
According to the New York Times, Yankees PA Announcer, Bob Sheppard, will be retiring. This comes as sad newsย to many fansโincluding me. We allย thought he was getting better, and that he wasย going to resume his role behind the mic at the new ballpark.
Theย man is 98-years-old, so it is understandable. There is no replacement for Sheppard as of now, but Jim Hall wonโt be the guy. Paul Olden will fill in for the two exhibition games this weekend.
Behind the mic at Yankee Stadium since 1955โwow. What an amazing career he had. He definitely left his mark with the Yankees, and Iโm sure he will never be forgotten. I listened to this guy my whole life, and so did many other generations of Yankees fans.
It will never be the same. Here is a tribute I made on Mr. Sheppardโs career not too long ago.
"โI think Bob just wants to take it easy and no longer have the pressure of, โCan he? Will he? Or wonโt he?โโ Doherty said in an e-mail message. โAnd, at 98, who can blame him?โ
โIโm happy to say that Bob is still doing well enough to drive a car,โ Doherty said. โHe picked his son up at the train this past weekend.โ
โNow on to him seeing his 100th birthday in a year and a half,โ Doherty said.
