3 Players the Washington Redskins Should Cut This Offseason

Jun 7, 2018

The Washington Redskins doubled their win total from five in 2011 to 10 in 2012. Thus, they're on pace to win 20 games by the time we reach 2014. With the progress they're making in mind, there aren't any major changes needed in D.C.

That said, there are always tweaks to be made. Here are five of them, starting with three veterans under contract who should be on the chopping block.

1. Jammal Brown

The Redskins need a new right tackle. Impending free-agent Tyler Polumbus struggled badly this season and shouldn't be brought back, and Brown—who missed the entire season due to hip problems—wasn't much better than Polumbus in 2010 and 2011. No way the 'Skins should keep the 33-year-old around for $3.5 million.

2. Josh Morgan

Is it too early to conclude that Morgan isn't worth the two-year, $11.5 million deal he signed less than a year ago? The guy didn't surpass the 62-yard mark once in 2012 and scored just twice. Considering he doesn't contribute as a return man either, I just don't think Morgan is worth anything close to the $3.8 million he's slated to make in 2013.

The Redskins can surely find a similar player for half the price. And when you're dealing with heavy cap sanctions, every dollar saved becomes even more crucial.

I place that asterisk there because I'm only saying the 'Skins shouldn't keep Hall at his current salary. They can't afford to give the guy $7.5 million in 2013, but he has indicated that he'd be willing to restructure his deal in order to stay in Washington. Hall played well enough down the stretch that I'd keep him on the roster for anything less than $3 million.

Unrestricted free agents they shouldn't re-sign: Madieu Williams and Tyler Polumbus

Williams had a terrible season and is fully past his prime. He can't be relied upon as a tackler or in coverage, which means there's no reason the Redskins should hang on to him. Brandon Meriweather and Reed Doughty are both better options, and I'm sure they can also find someone in the draft or free agency to step in and perform better than Williams.

I mentioned Polumbus above. It wouldn't kill them to keep him around as a cheap swing tackle, but they're better off with Josh LeRibeus and can find a younger, slightly cheaper version of Polumbus if they'd like.
