Former Padres Player Enzo Hernandez Reportedly Committed Suicide

Former San Diego Padres shortstop Enzo Hernandez died on Sunday at the age of 63 after an apparent suicide. 

According to the report from the Associated Press (via Aaron Gleeman of NBC Sports through ESPNDeportes' Staff), Hernandez was found at his home, but a spokesman declined to say whether it was a suicide. 

Within the report is a note from Venezuelan newspaper the Sunday Leader, which states that Hernandez "had apparently been struggling with depression for the past year. Authorities have not released an official comment or details."

Hernandez played eight seasons (1971-78) in Major League Baseball, all with the San Diego Padres. He hit .224 with two home runs and 129 stolen bases in 714 games. He played in more than 110 games in five seasons, including every year from 1974-76.

Obviously, given his offensive numbers, Hernandez was known more for his defense. He never won a Gold Glove, nor did he stack up great by scientific measurements. According to Fangraphs, his career UZR was minus-19.0. 

Hernandez does hold one of the more dubious honors, in baseball history. In 1971, he hit .222 with zero home runs and 12 RBI. Among players with enough at-bats to qualify for the batting title, he was last in all three categories (via Baseball Reference). 

Despite having almost no offensive game, even though he did steal 37 bases in 1974 and only struck out just 151 times in 2,612 career plate appearances, Hernandez was able to carve out a nice niche for himself in Major League Baseball.
