Is Kristi Toliver The Best Terrapin Point Guard of All-Time?
Sadly, a basketball dynasty came to an end last night with the Maryland Terrapins’ loss to the Louisville Cardinals in the regional final of the Women’s NCAA Basketball Tournament.
That’s not to say that the Lady Terps’ years of successful tournament appearances are done, but the careers of two great players abruptly stopped in an emotional heap.
The careers of Marissa Coleman, who had one of the legendary performances in men’s or women’s tournament history, and Kristi Toliver, a floor general who may go down as the greatest point guard in school history - man or woman.
There may be players who have accumulated more stats and more accolades, but there aren’t many who’ve done it all to lead to championships. For the majority of her career, Kristi Toliver was all-everything ; all-ACC, all-American, all-eyes-on-her at all times.
So you can let your mind quickly wander to the careers of Steve Blake, Johnny Rhodes and countless other Maryland greats, but ask yourself two questions. Did they have the trophies to back up their numbers? And did you enjoy watching them over their careers as much as you have enjoyed watching Kristi Toliver over hers?
If you don’t believe is sexism or racism, and you believe in great basketball, the answer to both is a thousands times ‘no.’
Kristi Toliver is the best Maryland has ever produced at the point guard position. If we were in Durham or Chapel Hill, you might have an argument, but its not even close in College Park. In close games, there was no question who would take the shot or make the decision.
And now that it’s over, there’s no question of who was the best to ever do it in a Terrapins uniform at the point guard position.
