Sunday Supplement: Wayne's World, King of Spurs & All Al-Owen

The hacks sat round Brian Woolnough’s breakfast table and exclusively talked about England this Sunday morning. After his brace yesterday and his seventh goal in four internationals, Wayne Rooney was the first topic to start off the show. Henry Winter (Daily Telegraph) spoke of the Manchester United forward as “England’s most important player… but he can’t go around punching corner flags.” Matt Lawton of the Daily Mail chimed in saying the reported bust-up with Sir Alex Ferguson after the Liverpool game, as claimed by Mark Lawrenson, could have been bourne out at Craven Cottage.

Second up for discussion was the Ledley King tug-of-war and the recent spat between Harry Redknapp and Fabio Capello. Joe Lovejoy of The Sunday Times provided the background to the straining of relations, as Capello sees ‘Arry as a threat to his position as England manager. Matt Lawton talked up the Spurs defender, describing him as “number three if not number two in the best center halves of the country.” Henry Winter added that King’s call-up was disrespectful to Redknapp and the Spurs medical team.

Michael Owen and his lack of a call-up to the England squad was then dissected. Lawton backed the perrenially injured striker and would include him “if he could touch his toes.” Joe Lovejoy voiced his backing for the Newcastle frontman, describing him as a “fantastic finisher.” Henry Winter rounded off the communal line, arguing that Michael Own is an “ace… who scores against top defences.”
