Virginia Tech Football: Is Frank Beamer on the Hot Seat in 2013?

David AldridgeJun 6, 2018

Following a disappointing 7-6 season, it is expected to be a very interesting offseason for Frank Beamer and the Virginia Tech Hokies. As fans have become increasingly frustrated with the Virginia Tech offense and the team's struggles in big games, will Beamer be coaching to keep his job in 2013?

Beamer's fate could depend on what happens in Blacksburg over the next few weeks.

The Hokies offense was a disaster for much of the season and was only able to amass 196 yards of total offense in Tech's 13-10 win over Rutgers in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Although Virginia Tech won the game, it was a disappointing showing for an offense that has already been called "outdated by 10, 15 years" by Todd McShay.

Offensive Coordinator Bryan Stinespring has received a great deal of criticism over the course of the season and many are calling for Beamer to make a change with Stinespring immediately. If Beamer decides to keep Stinespring as his coordinator and give him another season to turn things around, the pressure will become much greater in 2013 for both coaches.

One player who could play a key role in the Virginia Tech offense next season is quarterback Logan Thomas. Thomas appeared to regress during his second season as the team's starting quarterback, but he is still projected as a potential first-round pick by NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper.

Should Thomas elect to forego his final season of eligibility, it could be another difficult year for the Hokies in 2013.

Despite the struggles of this season, Frank Beamer will receive time to get his team to bounce back. As the winningest active coach in the FBS and the man responsible for making the Virginia Tech football program what it is, Beamer has earned more time than most coaches would receive after their team struggles through a 7-6 season.

However, Beamer could become a victim of the successful culture he has created in Blacksburg. Hokie fans expect their team to compete for ACC & BCS Championships on a regular basis and they will not tolerate mediocrity.

And if Virginia Tech doesn't make significant improvements over the course of next season, fans might start calling for someone new to step in to replace Beamer.
