Who Let The Wolfs Out?! Hartford Wolf Pack Could Help New York Rangers

Martin AveryMar 27, 2009

The New York Rangers won their last game when two former members of the Hartford Wolf Pack got a lot of ice time, and they lost their last game when the Wolfs saw limited action.

In his last game with the Wolf Pack, Sean Avery got an assist on a goal by their offensive defenseman Michael Sauer. Now they are working well together on the ice for the Rangers.

While Avery was with the Wolfs, they went on a six-game winning streak. They continued their winning ways after he got called up to the Rangers and are now in first place in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the AHL.

Another trend influencing the Rangers win/loss record depends on which first line they use. They have been revolving a line of old dogs, with Chris Drury between Nik Antropov and Markus Naslund, and a line of younger dogs, with Avery, Ryan Callahan, and Scott Gomez.

The Rangers starting lineup of Avery, Callahan, and Gomez set the pace of their game against the Minnesota Wild and New York won that one, 2-1.

The Rangers starting lineup of Drury, Antropov, and Naslund faced off against the first line for the Senators and the Sens won that one, 2-1.

When the Rangers played the Sabres, the Rangers won 5-3, and it was the A-Dog's line that started the game.

When the Rangers went up to Montreal, the Avery line was the second, even though Avery had scored two goals, had scored a goal a game for three games, and was the first star of the game in the Game Of The Week on NBC at MSG. Montreal won that game in a shootout, 4-3.

Avery’s big game at MSG, won by the Rangers, had the Avery line on the ice first. The Rangers won 4-1 over the Flyers.

The day before, when the Flyers won, it was the Drury line that was No. 1.

In the game before that, the Rangers beat the Predators 4-2, and the Avery line was No. 1.

In the 3-0 loss to the Hurricanes, the Avery line was No. 2.

In addition to Avery and Sauer, there are a few more Wolf Pack players, at least, the Rangers might want to recall. Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau, their top scorer, is in fourth place overall, with 29 goals and 49 assists for 78 points.

The Wolf Pack's second leading scorer is sixth in the AHL with 32 goals and 41 points for 73 points in 73 games.

Dale Weise recently scored two goals and had two assists in a game in Springfield, which the Wolf Pack won by a score of 7-2.

The Wolf Pack are 40-25-3-3, with 86 points and have now reached 40 wins for six  years in a row, tying the AHL record.

Another Wolf they might want to look at is Brandon "Sugar" Sugden, a friend of Avery's from Toronto, who had 754 penalty minutes in 164 games with the Syracuse Crunch.

YouTube, Sugden's website, and hockeyfights.com all show what he can do.
