Jets vs. Bills: Firing of Offensive Staff Would Be Acceptable After Jets Loss

If you missed the New York Jets' offense this season, Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills summed it up pretty well.

Mental errors and sloppy technique led to missed opportunities, and the Jets offense was in a tailspin almost from the very beginning.

...but it didn't take much longer to see all the reasons why so much change is called for in New York. Beyond the play design and play-calling, the game, as a whole, encapsulated a lot of the problems with the Jets offense.

CBS analyst Rich Gannon remarked on the unimaginative play-calling of the Jets offense, pointing out that they need to find ways to get their receivers open since they have trouble getting open on their own.

He can get a pass on proving unable to properly incorporate Tim Tebow into the offense—perhaps it was a lost cause all along—but Sparano has given the Jets plenty of reasons to move another direction in 2013.

Over the past two years, quarterback Mark Sanchez has given the Jets at least 52 reasons to move on next year. On the other hand, there are $8.25 million reasons this may not be the end of Sanchez's demise, which came to an anti-climactic end on Sunday. 

Sanchez threw a pick-six on his fourth attempt of the game. He completed less than 50 percent of his passes for the eighth time this season, more than any other starting quarterback this season.

He added two turnovers to bring his league-leading total to 52 turnovers over the past two years.

The Jets have lost all trust in him, and Sunday proved that; they ran the ball nine straight times to start the game, before Sanchez's first two passes were incomplete.

The running game, which was supposed to be the meat of the offense, has been bare as bone for much of the year. The Jets picked up their share of yards on the ground with 133 total rushing yards, but on 36 carries (3.7 yards per carry), they were not effective enough running the ball to carry the offense in lieu of a passing attack.

Clearly, there's enough blame to go around for the Jets' struggles on offense.

Whether or not Rex Ryan asked for an overhaul of the offense, there may be one coming soon. If this season is any indication, an overhaul in 2013 may only be the beginning of the necessary measures to getting the Jets offense moving again.
