ECW: The Land of the Rising Stars

Brendan O'NeillMar 27, 2009

Hello all again, well another day at work means another article can be written. You must all think I have an easy job, well I do, lol.

On to the article, I want to talk about ECW, not the ECW before Vince bought them out, but today's version of it.

The days of chairs shots, barbed wire, burning tables and downright pure violence are gone, some may say that because of this, ECW (the original version) has died. But I would say that it didn't die, it was simply given a rebirth.

The re-birth of this brand came only a few years ago and was given the 'big name' treatment, with such stars as Kurt Angle, RVD, Big Show and John Cena making appearances on the show week in week out.

It also had 'ECW Originals' plying their trade on it, people such as The Sandman, Ballz Mahoney and Tommy Dreamer where there to entice the fans that watched previous into watching.

The only problem in giving ECW the 'big name' treatment was that it is only on for one hour. There was no point in showcasing the bigger superstars on this show if they already had Raw and Smackdown that could do this, so instead the focus of this brand was changed.

Young, up-and-coming superstars would be given there chance to shine, and shine they have done. CM Punk, an unknown wrestler to me when he joined the ranks of ECW has spring boarded his way into the A-show and has excelled since the switch.

Kofi Kingston deserves a mention too, though his progression on RAW hasn't been as successful as the Straight Edged one.

As of right now ECW has Evan Bourne, Tyson Kidd, Jack Swagger, John Morrison, The Miz and Paul Burchill on the roster. Evan Bourne along with John Morrison seem to be the two that have the brightest future ahead of them.

Another bonus for the ECW brand at the minute is the commentating duo, Matt Striker and Todd Grisham. In my opinion, currently the best pairing at the minute, Cole and King, J.R and Tazz are all good commentators individually but not in the pairings Vince currently has them in.

The only problem with the current focus of bringing through young talent is that Vince doesn't seem to trust them on big occasions. Which is probably why, as of right now there is no ECW Title match scheduled for Wrestlemania. According to rumours Vince believes Swagger is too 'green' to be given a spot on Wrestlemania.

Well, I feel no matter how 'green' he is, Vince owes it to the ECW brand to have Swagger defend his title (against Bourne hopefully) at Wresltemania given last year's nine-second debacle.

Well that's it for this article folks. Comments are always welcome.
