Chelsea's Summer Plans

gabe kunzMar 26, 2009

Chelsea is an old team.

Look around at the starting players: Drogba, 31; Anelka, 30 and most likely only has one more year of premier league left in him; Lampard, 30; Ballack, 32 and Carvalho is 30-year-old.

(Mineiro will go in the summer, along with Deco, Malouda and Belletti).

Ricardo Quaresma is likely to leave, because of his poor performance, but I think that he should be granted another chance to show who he is. He is happy at Chelsea and he could be signed at a bargain price as a talent of the future, who could feature more prominently in the next couple seasons.

Chelsea will not spend big money in the summer transfers so do not stupid transfers like Daniel Alves. Bosingwa as played well on the right flank and there is no need to look for a replacement, especially one of the prices of Alves.

I believe that Chelsea should look to capture Van der Vaart in the summer transfer window. At 26, he still has many years of football left in him and he should only become a stronger player with time and increased confidence. He could be a great replacement for Deco and I can see him featuring next to Lampard as a more attacking center half.

Zhirkov would be a great addition on the left flank, replacing Malouda. It is rumored that Juventus will pay £12 million for Malouda and Chelsea could pick up Zhirkov for only £2 million pounds more.

The most important thing for Chelsea is to keep Gus Hiddink on a long-term contract.

We have only seen how he works for a short period of time, but I believe that he could solve many of Chelsea's problems with some summer transfer money and some time. I love Chelsea but the amount of coaches we have been though is ridiculous.

Guss Hiddink is personal friend of Abramovich from back in the days when Hiddink became the Russian National teams coach. It is rumored that Abramovich convinced Hiddink to take the Russian position. This is helpful, because it could buy Hiddink more trouble if he is in trouble and for once in a long while, Chelsea will not fire a coach so quickly.

Karim Benzema will not come to Chelsea, period. He is want by the likes of Barcelona who are willing to £35 million to get Benzema. I think Benzema is not worth that type of money and Chelsea understands those two facts.

I see some Beckham in Robinho.

Beckham’s career was on a quick downslide in Los Angeles with the decent players at the Galaxy and once he was given a chance to play with top-level players he quickly became a big impact.

The same could happen with Robinho in a transfer to Chelsea.

Of course, Robinho is a dream come true when he stays quiet and performs which has not been happening at Man City recently.

He could be a possible transfer if his poor performances continue, but at an asking price of  £18 million, he will be a gamble because he is a superstar and they’re ego can destroy a team.

Robinho could feature as a supporting striker behind Drogba or Anelka.

In all Chelsea have an aging team that needs to be rejuvenated with some new youth?
