What the American Soccer Game Needs and It's not David Beckham.

Colby NewquistMar 25, 2009

David Beckham, clearly the world's biggest name in soccer, was bought from Real Madrid by the LA Galaxy for $250 million for five years in hope to better American soccer.

But has he? Beckham has undoubtedly attracted crowds and filled stadiums, but has the American game changed?

Despite becoming slightly more popular the American game has not changed for the good.

America does not need a popular face, it needs talent. It needs style. It needs a make-over. There has not been an American team that plays football the way it is meant to be played. Our game has not been blessed with policies or tactics we have seen, for example, instituted by Arsene Wenger.

And sure a big name like Arsene forever changing the American game seems like a long shot. But is it? Whose to say no manager can make a lasting impact of proper football in our country.

Football, when looked at rightly, is not a complicated game. Simple short passes, patience, along with logical decision making, and a tad bit of creativity can produce beautiful soccer. Yet, most can not grasp this concept.

However, all the blame can not go onto the shoulders of the hierarchies in American football. We have to look at our youth. A wave of "Ronaldo's" are sweeping the nation, or want-to-be's rather.

Players who think that flash and flair makes one a great player. Sure, Ronaldo has flair and flash, but he has it in a controlled manner. On most occasions Ronaldo's first instinct is to keep the game flowing; not to dribble into a hand full of defenders.

This is where the American problem lies. There is not a balance between knowledgeable coaching and knowledgeable players.

Most coaches believe that the bigger, stronger, and faster you are the better you are (which is not close to the case). Most players do not understand the patience and rhythm of the game.

Until we learn that soccer is a thinking game, a game of patience, a game of tactics, a game that must constantly be flowing and moving, we will never be a serious force to be reckoned with.
