Formula One Postpones "Winner Takes All" System Until 2010

Mike CassMar 25, 2009

The winner takes all system has thankfully been deferred until 2010, and hopefully then it will be radically changed. But it was an absolute farce how Bernie Ecclestone and the FIA made it a rule, announced it and then had to defer it.

The FIA's failure to read their own rulebook and then for Max just to accept Bernies word that the teams agreed, considering The Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) had tried to implement their own new points scoring system, which the FIA considered and rejected is crazy.

How could he possibly think that FOTA were in agreement, seems a very strange system for creating new rules. 'Bernie told me it was OK' doesn't cut it, especially as it was his idea in the first place!

The concept it's self is stupid, one driver could win say four races and not finish in any of the rest, where as another could finish second in every race of the season and not be crowned champion.

Wouldn't be much point in calling it a championship, as only a few teams and drivers are capable of consistent race wins and it would also make team orders inevitable.

I don't think it would have created more overtaking, because if someone qualified out of position at the back , you're not going to try and push through because you have to get the win for it to mean anything, which would be unlikely to happen.

It only really makes the guy in second think about it, but I think any F1 driver would be going for the win under the current system. The problem is having to save the car for the next race, and not being able to attack all the way to the flag.

Teams such as Force India and Torro Rosso wouldn't have much reason to compete either and you would could also have a points table where the driver with the most points at the top of table might not be the winner.

It even makes a mockery of the podium celebrations. What's the point in having three drivers up there, as winning is all that matters, if they want to cost cuts why don't they just have the winner up there, only one trophy to present and there would be no need for the champagne!

Bernie is in a powerful position, he knows that the manufacturers can't threaten to break away and set-up their own championship, because they can't afford it in the current economic climate.

Therefore he can impose what he wants, so I'm resigned to the fact that it's coming, but lets pray it's amended in some way to save what's left of Formula One.
