Where's the Rest of Brenda Frese's Money?
Interesting piece in yesterday’s Baltimore Sun revolving around coaching contracts at the University of Maryland. Among the highlights:
- Maryland has promised to pay offensive coordinator James Franklin $1 million if he is not named to succeed Ralph Friedgen as head coach.
- Williams’ contract, amended a number of times, has been said by the university to be worth more than $2 million annually if he meets all academic and athletic incentives. Friedgen, 61, agreed to a new deal in 2004 guaranteeing annual compensation of about $1.5 million.
- Frese, 38, makes $300,000 in base salary, her contract from 2007 says. It contains a number of possible bonuses — including more than $125,000 for radio and television appearances as well as other payments for personal appearances, fund-raising, team performance and graduation rate.
Interesting outlooks. Obviously, each coach deserves big money in their own rightm but of the entire bunch, only Brenda Frese can be looked upon as a consistent earner of her salary. Ralph Friedgen started out hot, and has underachieved to the point of James Franklin’s name popping up as a soon-to-be replacement. Gary Williams? Well, in spite of what you’ve read in these web pages, I love Gary Williams.
But Brenda Frese is the only one who appears to be a regular earner of the least amount of pay. Granted, women’s basketball isn’t the Golden Calf of College Park athletics, but for what she’s done for Terrapins basketball and college basketball as a whole, there might be room for a boost in the bread for the Freser.
