49ers Defensive Coordinator Greg Manusky Ditches Hybrid 3-4 Permanently

Sweets ThomasMar 24, 2009

Thank God for defensive coordinator Greg Manusky and his “true” 3-4 defensive scheme.

Thank God that the powers that be in San Francisco saw to it that Mike Nolan had to hit the road and took his heart with him because it didn’t need to be left in San Francisco.

I’m not sure how many 49er fans noticed the remarkable difference once Mike Nolan was sent packing; Manusky ditched what the newspapers are calling a “hybrid 3-4,” whatever the hell it was; let’s just say I’m happy about the change.

Manny Lawson is ecstatic about the change as well, and maybe now, he can be what all of us envisioned a outside linebacker to be—an awesome pass rusher.

As most of the 49er faithful remember, our pass rush was one of our weakest areas last season, and Lawson had only a few sacks, while he sat on the sidelines on many downs as Nolan ran some convoluted mess of defensive packages.

They had 30 sacks last season—horrendous, simply horrendous.

Now it seems we as fans have something to be positive about; Coach Manusky seems to have it right and players like Justin Smith are also happy about going back to the basic 3-4.

Where is it written that coaches need to make schemes so damned difficult? Why can’t they see what a lot of us see? Stick to what works and forget the rest. This isn’t brain surgery, it’s football—a pretty basic concept with a few little changes thrown in to make the game interesting.

Remind me again how long the WCO (West Coast Offense) was used? Simple is best in most cases.

As the first mini-camp of the season has just opened, the defense is already finding its collective groove, and hopefully, the team will turn its head toward getting its offense where it needs to be.

We need better passing and a much better offensive line to help what head coach Singletary wants to run—a run-heavy offense instead of the dinks and dunks of under 10 yards that we have been accustomed to seeing in the last few years.

Hopefully, we will see more runs to set up the scoring we need and not the pathetic passes from noodle-armed quarterback hopefuls that end up being intercepted and falling far short of their marks or the passes for five yards when the team is at third down with eight yards to go for a first down.

Ex head coach Nolan always wanted to keep the game manageable, just enough not to lose—bullcrap with that concept. I say use your defense to manage the game and keep them off the field as much as possible, and hopefully, the offense can score on a regular basis.

Come on 49ers let put the effort into winning at least 10 games this year.

Whadda ya say??
