Is Mangini the Answer for the Cleveland Browns? Or Was Crennel Short Changed?
This just in for the beloved Browns fans. Eric Mangini is our coach. Now I am not one that's against giving someone a chance, I mean since we came back in 1999 that is all we have done. Hiring coaches with little (Mangini) to no NFL head coaching experience (Palmer, Davis, and Crennel).
But let's take a closer look at Romeo.
Romeo may not have shown much enthusiasm or passion. But did anyone see Willie McGinest's interview on the NFL network. He all but said, all players felt personally responsible for Romeo losing his job.
That made me think. I thought, damn, that's a powerful statement from a man more than likely heading to the Hall of Fame. It made me think was it Crennel or Savage the problem.
Everyone who knows anything about football, knows Savage was a walking ego. He had total control pretty much on roster moves and draft picks. Now, I am not saying he did not listen to Crennel ever, but Savage wanted to make a mark that this was his team.
Let's not forget, that Savage traded away our whole 2007 draft on Brady Quinn. Now I know all people from Ohio think Quinn is the Messiah, but is he really that good? I say NO! And here is why.
His senior year...Not one top 10 win. HE beat teams like Army, Navy and Air Force. Good job Brady, beat teams that represent our Armed Forces...Oh by the way, they have height and weight restrictions. That means no 300 lb lineman.
You get beat by USC on maybe some controversy, only to be embarrassed in Notre Dame's Bowl Game.Oh who did that? Oh yeah he was drafted ahead of you, JaMarcus Russell, and he sucks too.
Crennel made a risky move in 2007...That paid off. He released Frye and put Anderson in charge. How many teams in NFL history have released the starting QB after week one, and still finished with a winning record. I can't think of any. Great coaching decision!
Anderson finished '07 with a 10-5 record. Not bad for a team that finished in the bottom third in defense. That tells me that Anderson did it on his own. But wait Cleveland, Crennel was stupid for not starting Quinn.
The one thing I will never get about the city that houses our team, is you're never happy. That's why guys like Lebron(welcome NYC), Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, and any Alomar have never or will never stay in "Believe"land.
Crennel is a good coach I believe. He needs a class on motivation, but he knows his stuff. I can not say Crennel would have traded Winslow for well pretty much nothing. Tampa made out like a fat cat. Thanks Eric. Royal will be a comparable addition, yeah right.
Romeo loved loyalty, like Joe Jurevicius. Not Eric, hit the road Joe, your services are not needed here. Hey Eric, thanks for signing Patten, I needed to read clevelandbrowns.com to even realize he was once a Cleveland Brown.
I hear Mangini is trying to get Jerry Rice out of retirement...just kidding. Crennel brought in and developed youth. Mangini is bringing in has beens and never will be's.
In closing, at the end of the year I thought firing Crennel was the right thing. Now all I think is 4-12 may not be as bad as this year. Because in my eyes, with the talent that the Browns possess anything less than 10-6 is a waste.
Well, Cleveland remember our motto..."There's always next year." Sorry Romeo!
