Capello Names Squad: Foster, Baines, King, and Lennon Selected

Matt SMar 22, 2009

Fabio Capello has named a 24-man squad for the forthcoming internationals against Slovakia and Ukraine.

Most surprising from the Italian is the first call-up of the uncapped fullback Leighton Baines and the re-call of Ledley King.

Manchester United backup goalkeeper Ben Foster also receives his first call-up under Capello after a Man-of-the-Match display in the Carling Cup Final.

Aaron Lennon, also impressive in that match, and throughout the month of March, is also chosen, moving up from the Under-21 squad named on Friday.

Ledley King has not played for England since June 2007, and it was believed that his long-term injury worries would prevent him from playing at international level again.

Leighton Baines is called up in place of Manchester City’s Wayne Bridge, who misses out through injury. Baines is one of three Everton defenders named in the squad, with Joleon Lescott also receiving the call to join Phil Jagielka.

David Beckham makes the squad, having negotiated to stay at AC Milan until the end of the season, and will face stiff competition on the right-hand side from Shaun Wright-Phillips and Aaron Lennon, the latter hoping for his first cap in what will be exactly two years on Saturday.

Missing out this time are the Aston Villa pair of Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor, whose form has both dipped along with that of their club. The latter will be the more disappointed, having started in England's last match in Spain.

Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard are both recalled after missing the defeat in Spain through injury. Carlton Cole and Peter Crouch both retain their places in the squad.

England’s 24-man squad for the games against Slovakia and Ukraine:

Goalkeepers: David James (Portsmouth), Robert Green (West Ham), Ben Foster (Manchester United)

Defenders: Glen Johnson (Portsmouth), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), John Terry (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Matt Upson (West Ham), Joleon Lescott (Everton), Ledley King (Tottenham), Leighton Baines (Everton)

Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Aston Villa), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), David Beckham (AC Milan, on loan from LA Galaxy), Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City)

Forwards: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Emile Heskey (Aston Villa), Carlton Cole (West Ham), Peter Crouch (Portsmouth)
