It's Eugene Monroe or Jason Smith!
Its Eugene Monroe or Jason Smith!
Let me be the first to burst everyone's bubble and say, "You all know we are not getting Aaron Curry!"
There is no way we select Aaron Curry with the third pick in the upcoming draft. I am not saying this to be a jerk, in fact, I love the idea of drafting Curry! I am basing this off what I believe intelligent football minds would do in this situation.
Here is why:
1. Games are won in the trenches and the addition of Eugene Monroe or Jason Smith would have an immediate impact on the offense.
2. The Chiefs will not be able to get much in return for Larry Johnson so they will make it more enticing for him to change his attitude when they fix the line and start getting those holes he used to blow through.
He is a good back, he just needs to mature and start taking care of business.
3. Tony Gonzalez would be thrilled because he would know the Chiefs are committed now by solidifying the offensive line. This move will make make the offensive side of the ball consistently effective.
4. The Chiefs have picked up three linebackers in free agency and have several players they need to evaluate during the season to determine their true worth.
5. Once the Chiefs add the offensive lineman with their first pick, they will be able to focus on the defense and feel confident they can compete on the offensive side of the ball.
6. Scott Pioli is not going to bring Matt Cassel into Kansas City so that he can get killed behind a weak line that he could fix with one pick.
7. Todd Haley cannot work his magic when the quarterback is running for his life and the line can not open a hole to run through.
8. Offensive lineman (especially tackles) have more of an impact on the game than a linebacker.
9. If Eugene Monroe and Jason Smith are taken with the first 2 picks Aaron Curry might be an option, but it is more likely Pioli will trade down to pick up possibly 2-3 potential starters through the draft.
10. When you are one step away from making several players on the team considerably more effective you take that step. Cassel, Gonzalez, Bowe, Johnson, Engram and the rest of the offense will benefit from stronger line play.
If I had my way the Chiefs would be known for their defense. They would again become the team that could shut down any opponent like the days of Derrick Thomas and Neil Smith, but now is not the time to reach for that. The offensive line needs to be taken care of.
Too many players have been hurt because the line has not been NFL caliber. With one year together the offense will really start to click and the coaches will have the time to evaluate the defense.
This year will give Scott Pioli and Todd Haley a much clearer picture of what the team has and what they need to on defense. Who knows they may actually find out that players like Glenn Dorsey, Tamba Hali, and Turk McBride can be assets to the organization.
