Undertaker-Shawn Michaels: Who Gets The Nod?

Jordan DouglassMar 20, 2009

Two icons.

Two streaks.

One match.

Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels.

In a battle of epic proportion, this match has history, intrigue, and will answer the often-debated question—who is Mr. WrestleMania?

Both of these men have left their mark on the WWE's biggest pay-per-view. Each of them have put it all on the line to steal the show and protect their legacies. Now these two future Hall of Famers will battle one another in what is the most talked about match of they year, and has the possibility to be the match of the ages.

So who gets the nod? Who walks out the undisputed king of WrestleMania? Let's review each man's case.

The Undertaker's streak is legendary in its own right. It has become WrestleMania tradition. 16 men have stepped to the plate and tried to take the “Deadman” down, but none have been able to walk away with the victory.

From Jimmy Snuka to Sid Vicious to Triple H to Edge, not one of these men has been able to slay the dragon that is the Undertaker. During this streak, he has walked away a champion three times, participated in a Hell in a Cell match, defeated his "brother" Kane twice, and even defeated two men on his own.

Many talented individuals have stepped in this man's path, and all have fallen. The next challenger's chances don't look too good.

That is, if the challenger wasn't Shawn Michaels.

HBK is exactly what he says he is—a showstopper. He shines his brightest at WrestleMania. There's no question Shawn has put on blockbusters with several past and future legends in this business.

His title match with Bret Hart when "The boyhood dream came true,” his match with Steve Austin which officially kicked off the Attitude Era, his show-stealing bouts with Chris Jericho and Kurt Angle, and the timeless classic bout retiring Ric Flair are all on Michael’s résumé.

Shawn embodies what WrestleMania is about and his matches showcase that entirely. He's got agility, speed, great ring presence, and is willing to put it all on the line.

Plus, Shawn has a bit of a streak of his own. In one-on-one competition, he has constantly defeated the “Deadman.” He even did it in Undertaker's playground, Hell in a Cell.

Shawn has a daunting task ahead of him, but has the best shot of taking the “Deadman” down. He's at his event and has Undertaker's number, which doesn't bode will for the the “Deadman.”

So who wins?

Well, that's a tough call as both men are deserving of the rub. In my personal opinion, I think Undertaker should still get the win. His streak is legendary and should remain intact, not to mention it has become tradition for him to win at every WrestleMania, and finally get that one victory over Shawn Michaels that eludes him.

Until the big day, this will constantly be debated, but two things won't be. A streak will come to an end, and this match will be the highlight of WrestleMania XXV.
