Ray Lewis Asks, Why So Serious?

Ray Lewis is extremely fortunate that the press conference announcing his new deal with the Baltimore Ravens came in the midst of a Maryland Terrapins tournament victory, because there’s no way he would emerge today as an unscathed hero from his off-season of whining and jiving.

“The bottom line: Was there ever a decision for me to leave Baltimore? I don’t think so. I didn’t visit anyone else’s facility. That would have taken away from what I do for my city. When I put that purple jersey on my back, I give everything that I have for every fan that’s in the stands,” said Ray.

No, Ray. The bottom line is that you wanted to get paid, and that you wanted the world to know how much you wanted to get paid. We get that you were hurt free agency even had to happen.  We get that you believed you were worth just as much to a few other teams in the NFL as you mean to the Ravens.

But when the suitors for the prom never called to confirm the colors or the pick-up time, Lewis realized that it was best to get back with the chick he’d been friends with since elementary school. Partly because everyone expected him to, but mostly because he knew she would take him back at a moment’s notice, just to be in the pictures and yearbook with him.

And that’s what needed to happen for the Ravens. They needed to be the plain looking gal that, somehow, managed to get the star linebacker with whom she had a bond and admiration that would never really be broken. He took her back, just like she needed him to, and just like most of the people watching on the outside wanted him to.

But the problem with most jocks and the women that love them, is that a little piece of their support dies when he does her dirty in public.

We’ll still support Lewis, and we’ll support the rest of his time with the Ravens. But for his public dismissal of his—and our—number one squeeze, I’m sure there are quite a few folks who won’t be all smiles and tears when the relationship is consummated with Ray Lewis’ Hall of Fame induction speech.
