Kim Clijsters Closer to a Comeback

Reuters reported yesterday thatย  2005 U.S. Open champ Kim Clijsters may be considering a comeback beyond the upcoming Wimbledon โ€œnew roofโ€ exo and World Team Tennis gigs that are already in the works. Hereโ€™s what her former coach Carl Maes has to say about it:

"

โ€œWhen she stopped (playing) I never said it would be the last time (we would see her on the tour)...I think itโ€™s too early to tell, but somewhere in the back of her mind, it must be something thatโ€™s sheโ€™s considering...If sheโ€™s fit and wants to play then I think itโ€™s a possibility.

I wouldnโ€™t be completely surprised (if she decided to come back)...What we saw with Martina Hingis and Lindsay Davenport, who came back, is that their best level is probably good enough to win a tournament, and win some matches against the top players...If she is fully fit, then I am sure that her best level would be good enough to be competitive.โ€

"

Can you blame her for thinking about it? With Justine retired, Maria out with injury, and the Williams sisters not playing week-in, week-out, a healthy Kimmie looks at the likes of Ivanovic and Jankovic and must think โ€œI have a shot.โ€

Iโ€™m all for a comeback. In my opinion, the WTA needs all the help it can get. And Iโ€™d love to see her and Jelena in a spread-eagle showdown.
