Round One: Which Midwest Region Teams Will Dodge the Knockout Punch?

Jake KarmelMar 19, 2009

The NCAA Tournament is always the most interesting sports event in my opinion.

I just love it when a favorite team like the Duke Blue Devils goes down early in the tournament. It makes the tournament just that more interesting to watch.

I view the NCAA tournament like a boxing match. Whoever can deliver the knockout blow in each round will move on.

Lets start with the Midwest Region.

The No. 1-seeded Louisville Cardinals will obviously top Morehead State by a landslide. That should not even be a contest.

The No. 2-seeded Spartans from East Lansing, Mich., will not be contested in their first round match up vs. Robert Morris. Tom Izzo is too good of a coach to lose in the first round to Robert Morris.

Here is where the fun starts. North Dakota State is a very good, fast, and athletic team that will give Bill Self's Kansas Jayhawks trouble. The defending champs will definitely have their hands full with this veteran North Dakota State team, even though Kansas will come out victorious in this scare of a first-round match.

The fourth-seeded Wake Forest Demon Deacons will also have their hands full with the Cleveland State Vikings. If there is a big upset in this region, I am calling this one.

Yes, Jeff Teague has been absolutely spectacular for his Demon Deacons, but Cleveland State is just as fast as Wake Forest, believe it or not.

Wake Forest will have a scare in this first-round match also, but will come out victorious and live another day.

Here is my upset. Well, I do not really consider this an upset. The 12th-seeded Arizona Wildcats will top over the boys from Utah. Arizona has made the tournament an amazing 25 years in a row.

The boys from Tuscon will come ready to play, as the veterans of this team will lead the pack against Utah. Arizona will come away victorious and ready to play in round two vs. Wake Forest.

Another small upset for me is USC over Maryland. The 10th-seeded Trojans will come away victorious vs. the boys from the ACC. The Pac-10-ready Trojans are fast, agile, and if they come to play defense vs. the talented Terrapins, they will come away with a big win.

A match-up many people are calling an upset in is the West Virginia Mountaineers against the Dayton Flyers. I just do not see this happening. West Virginia will come away with a win that will not even be close against Dayton.

These are just predictions and who knows what could happen. George Mason made the Final Four a few years back, and I wonder who called that.

Probably no one unless you can tell the future. Stuff like that makes the NCAA tournament the best sporting event to watch.
