Does Being the Points Leader Make Malkin Better Than Crosby and Ovechkin?

Martin AveryMar 18, 2009

NHL scoring-leader Evgeni Malkin, with 102 points, 70 assists, 32 goals, 65 even strength points, and 53 road points, is arguably the best player in the world right now.

Does it mean he is better than Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin? Those two get a lot more attention.

Crosby and Ovechkin are feuding, but Malkin gets along with both of them. He plays with Crosby for the Penguins and with Ovechkin for Russia.

Malkin tied a career-high with five points to surpass 100 for the second consecutive season, and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Atlanta Thrashers 6-2 earlier this week.

His five points against the Thrashers helped him pass the 100-point mark for the second year in a row. He has a big lead in the scoring race.

Malkin's 32 goals and 70 assists are good for 102 points, 10 more than second-place Sidney Crosby's 92, with 27 goals and 65 assists, and 12 ahead of Alex Ovechkin's 90 49 goals and 41 assists.

During his two-goal, three-assist, five-point performance in Pittsburgh, the home crowd chanted a new nickname for the Russian forward: "MVP!"

Malkin may become the fourth Penguin to win the NHL MVP award after Mario Lemieux (1988, '93, '96), Jaromir Jagr (1999) and Sidney Crosby (2007).

Malkin had 106 points last season to finish second in the league.

This is the fourth consecutive season the Penguins have had a player score at least 100 points. Crosby had 102 in 2005-06 and won the scoring title with 120 the following season.

Malkin may become the fourth Penguin in history to have his name on the Art Ross Trophy, joining Lemieux (six times), Jagr (five times), and Crosby (one time).

It would mark the 13th time in the last 21 seasons that Pittsburgh has held the honor.

Would that make him the best? Would it mean he's better than Crosby and Ovechkin and the rest?

What is this? A test?
