Rory McIlroy Misses the Cut at the Hong Kong Open

Michael FitzpatrickJun 7, 2018

Rory McIlroy will not be playing over the weekend for the first time since the U.S. Open back in mid-June.

McIlroy, who entered this week’s Hong Kong Open as the defending champion, posted rounds of 72 and 73 to miss the cut by three strokes.

He made just one birdie during a sloppy opening round 73, and was sent backing with a five-over-par 36-hole score of 145.

Blast from the past leader Michael Campbell is currently nine-under-par and is leading Miguel Angel Jimenez by a stroke heading into the weekend.

Campbell is looking for his first win since the 2005 HSBC World Match Play Championship, which came just three months after he shocked the world at Pinehurst by holding off Tiger Woods to win the U.S. Open title.

Last week’s Barclays Singapore Open Champion, Matteo Manassero, and European Ryder Cup Captain, Jose Maria Olazabal, were each at three-under-par for the tournament, six strokes behind Campbell.

Golf fans will have a difficult time trying to figure out which is more shocking as we head into the weekend at the Hong Kong Open: Campbell leading the tournament, or McIlroy missing the cut by three strokes.
