What Josh McDaniels' Ultimatum to Jay Cutler Should Be

Steven ResnickMar 18, 2009

Josh McDaniels has a lot of work cut out for him to fix the Jay Cutler situation. Now it's time for McDaniels to get tough with Cutler and give him an ultimatum. Why? Well, the immaturity of Cutler has been well documented in his career from illusions of grandeur, verbal sparring with Philip Rivers, and his reaction to McDaniels listening to a possible trade that didn't even come close to being completed.

Cutler has now missed the voluntary opening of team meetings as well as making an appearance at a fundraiser that he had accepted awhile ago.

So, McDaniels has to ask himself, if Cutler is the team leader and he continues to act the way he is, what should the consequences be?

Right now, most NFL experts are pointing a finger at McDaniels and stating he's gotten off to a rough start, which may be true, but Cutler is just making it worse with his behavior.

Even though Cutler has asked for a trade, it doesn't mean the Broncos have to trade him. It may be in the best interest of the team to trade Cutler, but as of now Cutler's value has dropped tremendously due to his actions and not taking responsibility for those actions.

The Broncos have options because there are still some solid free agent quarterbacks who can be had for cheap. One that comes to mind is Jeff Garcia. Now, Garcia is by no means a long term solution, but if Cutler continues to be mouthy and continues to prove that he's not a team leader, McDaniels and the Broncos organization have to do something.

Besides signing a free agent quarterback, there's another option for the Broncos: Give Cutler an ultimatum to start acting like a team player and stop talking to the media about the situation or sit on the bench, whether or not the team signs another quarterback.

Cutler reminds me of a child who has been told, "no," yet can't accept that answer. They continue to ask, then turn to whining, and then start crying because the child is not getting what it wants. Unlike some parents who will give in to their child after making a big enough scene, the Broncos have to stick to their guns, otherwise it shows that the organization is a pushover.

Lastly, Broncos fans do realize that Cutler is the future of the team. Some claim that he's been their best quarterback since John Elway. The problem is, Jake Plummer was the best quarterback to put the Broncos jersey on since Elway retired.

Cutler's record so far as a starter is 17-20, compared to Plummer at 39-15. Even the man Cutler got into a sparring match of words with has a record of 33-15 as a starter. So, Rivers has 16 more wins and 5 less losses.

It's obvious if Cutler is unable to be traded what the Broncos need to do. The only question is, will they do it?
