According to multiple reports, Athletics" target="_blank">including the Oakland A's themselves, A's skipper Bob Melvin has just been named the 2012 American League Manager of the Year. Melvin is the second manager in Oakland history to win the BBWAA honor and the first in 20 years (Tony LaRussa, 1992). He is the 14th manager to win the award at least twice and only the sixth manager to win the award in both leagues.

The award is another nod to the amazing season the A's had in 2012. Under Melvin, Oakland improved its win total from 74 to 94 and won the American League West title on the final day of the season. This was done despite the second lowest payroll in baseball and no less than eight key injuries to regulars, including not having two projected starters (Dallas Braden and Brett Anderson) and the projected starting third baseman (Scott Sizemore) either all or most of the season.

Melvin's steady hand was definitely needed as Oakland's roster had 17 rookies at the end of the season. The A's improved as the season went along, posting the best record in baseball (68-33) after starting the season 26-35.

With this award, Melvin becomes the third member of the A's to receive some kind of individual award/achievement this year. Josh Reddick won the first Gold Glove for an Oakland outfielder since 1985 (Dwayne Murphy) and Billy Beane won his second MLB Executive of the Year Award last week.
