Celtic-Rangers: The Fans' Verdict

Andy MuirheadMar 16, 2009

We thought that after having pre-match views on the Cup Final, that we should also have post-match views from Rangers and Celtic fans.

Given that the forums and messageboards were a hotbed of activity after the match with fans venting out their anger or celebrating winning the cup, we felt that giving the views of just two of our writers would not be appropriate or worthwhile given the emotional comments from Rangers and Celtic fans.

Some of it makes for interesting reading.

Rangers Fans

“I’m absolutely gutted. What a gutless, soulless performance. Not a single player in that team deserved to be on the park today. Most disappointed I’ve been in Mendes. Barry, your time is up son, we really needed a performance from you today, and you gave us nothing. Even Davis was off the boil. Clearly we missed Bougherra, Weir’s pace was hopelessly exposed. How many stupid cards do our players have to pick up?” - bluepeter

“I'm actually getting to the point where I'm embarrased to wear a Rangers shirt now” - Bluenose

A shadow of what we should be— even though Ferguson is devoid of ideas, he seemed to be the only player that understands what it means to grace the shirt. Zero passion, zero quality.” - tommy

“Fucking shite performance, Smiths decisions baffle me sometimes. Regardless of whether we win the league I want Smith out. Fucking piss poor and Ally is certainly not ready to be manager. We played better before he made any fucking changes, soon as we go one down, we just thump it up the middle.

Mendes, great player but never kicked a ball today, went missing. Davy Weir and Broadfoot, our centre backs, what a sick joke that is. Dire Dire Dire, we are in a shocking state as a football club.”- davyh

“Fucking ridiculous. Utterly abysmal. McCulloch and Daily shouldn’t have been anywhere near that squad far less the team, they were fucking abortionate. Miller was abhorrent and we took off our biggest attacking threat when we really needed something. Boyd, as big a fan as I am of him, shows once again why he doesn’t play these games. The midfield didn’t shut down all game and gave the players far too much space to play through.

“The only pass marks today were for Whittaker who I thought had a fine game going forward (left a lot of space in behind though) and Papac, who did very much the same on the other flank. Ferguson did nothing but get in the face of Lennon, his only noticeable incident. Mendes didn’t play at all well, Davis had no impact. Novo was forever chasing lost causes and had no end product.

We missed Bougherra but it wouldn’t have made a blind bit of difference in all honesty. There was no heart in the performance, no pride, no determination, no drive. This bunch only see the colour of money. The title MUST be won or it’s curtains for Smith, McCoist, McDowall and all the deadwood cluttering up this club.” - KazzyTI

“A team of has-beens and duds, with the most gutless midfield ever fielded in an old firm game.  A jump the dyke. No will to win, no game plan, no style, nothing. Bears were openly at each others throats throughout the game because of the shambles on the field. That is most gutless, shambolic display I’ve witnessed from a Rangers side in a cup final. The Blind leading the blind, and the blind following the blind.” - adamski

“Was back at Ibrox after game (if I can call it that) and a short while later the players came back in. Some of their attitudes were absolutlely disgusting, laughing and joking! The lack of respect they showed for supporters about was disgraceful, no way to behave when you play for the Rangers!” -sccgers

“We know he can’t coach, we know he loathes attacking football and wingers, we know he is tactically clueless, we know he can’t scout but he can’t even motivate the players. Has he told the players he is leaving in the summer? Because it’s clear they aren’t working for him.

Nobody goes that extra yard, nobody bursts their gut for the cause. We rarely win more than three games on the bounce, no hunger and no desire. It was evident he gave up a while back, maybe the players noticed that as well?

All I am going to say is, Pedro and Davis were in discussion in the fist half. I was watching them closely and they didn’t look happy and looked towards the bench in, almost disgust. I don’t think they are happy the way the manager is deploying them and know he isn’t up to the job. That’s worrying.

Just look at their performances, it speaks volumes. Pedro was NOT a happy footballer today.” - Albertz was King

Celtic Fans

Strachan was brave in choosing the team he did, which could have backfired but turned out to be the correct choice. The players performed brilliantly. Especially in extra time. Brown, Loovens, McGeady and McDonald I thought were terrific. Loovens I do no rate at all but he was absolutely brilliant.” - mccaff

“St. Paddy’s Day comes early as Irish duo stuns the H*** !!! Credit to both, but it’ll be nice to have a bit of peace from the anti - WGS brigade ( for a week anyway ! ).Tremendous effort from the Bhoys today, especially Scott McDonald, who ran his heart out up front.” - borstalbhoy

“Absolutely bossed them in extra-time. For all Strachan’s faults one thing you can say about his teams is that they are extremely fit. We never looked troubled in the thirty minutes.” - toonbhoy

“There are days in football when the result does not convey the whole facts, and yesterday was one of those days.

While we laboured at times on a poor surface, we were so far ahead of them in every department of the game, that they must be seriously concerned about the gulf in quality, given their expected summer clearout.

Now, I know the league table suggests otherwise, but we are stronger, fitter, younger, better and we can improve on yesterday’s performance with the squad we have. They must look at a side that includes Weir, Dailly, Broadfoot, McCulloch, Novo, Miller, Boyd, Ferguson and Mendes and wonder where they go from here. The only players out of Mordor who might get a game for us currently are Davis and Bougherra, and that’s as a squad player.

We have laboured this season for many reasons, but individual performances yesterday from Hinkel, Loovens, Brown, McGeady and McDonald were miles ahead of their best on the day. Captain Trackie is done. Finished. The game passed him by, and his only noteworthy contribution was having the decency to give us the ball back after Samaras’ injury. Without him, they have nothing. What a cryin’ shame….” - fatbhoab
