Garcia vs. Judah for 140-Pound Supremacy Opens Up Year with Bang on Showtime

Melvin JonesNov 6, 2012

Lineal 140-pound king Danny “Swift” Garcia (25-0, 16 KO) will defend his crown against former three-time world champ Zab “Super” Judah (42-7, 29 KO) on January 19 to open up the boxing year with a bang. Lem Satterfield of RingTV.com has reported the news.

This fight will be broadcast by Showtime and will rival another super fight, Andre Ward vs. Kelly Pavlik, that will open up HBO's boxing year. The fight is scheduled to take place in Brooklyn's spanking new Barclays Center and will be promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.

On the undercard, new WBO Middleweight Champion Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin will defend his title for the first time against an opponent to be named later.

Garcia is coming off a title defense—a rematch against future Hall of Famer Erik Morales. Garcia looked sharp, knocking out "El Terrible" with a thunderous left hook in Round 4 to end the fight and Morales' career in the U. S.

This will be Garcia's third defense of his lineal title and second straight in Brooklyn.

Zab Judah will be coming home to Brooklyn hoping to end the reign of Garcia. This will be Judah's first appearance in the ring since defeating previously undefeated Vernon Paris by ninth-round knockout back on March 24.

This will be also be Judah's third attempt at being the man in this division, after previously losing to Kostya Tszyu back in 2001 and then to Amir Khan about a decade later. Judah was also the Lineal Welterweight Champion after he decimated Cory Spinks in 2005, but he lost the title to Carlos Baldomir in 2006.
