Where Will Torry Holt Land: Team By Team Analysis

Gerald NgMar 15, 2009

Here's a team by team analysis of which teams might make a play for Holt. We'll rate the likelihood of the team trying to sign Holt.

NFC North

Green Bay Packers- Spend a load of draft picks on wide receivers in recent years. Still have Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Donald Driver and Greg Jennings on the roster. Can safely rule them out. (0/5)

Detroit Lions- They do have Calvin Johnson, but they could use an upgrade at the No. 2 position. Have more pressing needs though so I would not expect the Lions to try hard to pursue Holt. (2/5)

Chicago Bears- They have arguably the worst set of wide receivers in the whole NFL at the moment and could use an upgrade. A real possibility. (5/5)

Minnesota Vikings- They wanted Houshmanzadeh in free agency, but the price put them off. Holt might come slightly cheaper after a down year last season. If they think Holt is better than Sidney Rice, they'll probably try to sign him.

NFC South

Carolina Panthers- It would be a homecoming of sorts for Holt if he returns to Carolina, where he played his college ball. Unfortunately, they don't have the cap room and they already have Mushin Muhammad as their complement to Steve Smith. (2/5)

Atlanta Falcons- Falcons already have Roddy White and Michael Jenkins. They're looking more at acquring a pass-catching tight end more than anything. (1/5)

New Orleans Saints- Marques Colston and Lance Moore would be their starting wide receivers next season. And they still have Robert Meachem, their first-round pick from two years ago. (0/5)

Tampa Bay Bucanneers- Antonio Bryant could use another wide receiver at the other side, but with the current youth movement, one can safely assume they wont have much interest in Holt. (0/5)

NFC West

Arizona Cardinals- Even if Boldin is traded, they still have Steve Breaston, a 1,000 yard receiver last year, and Early Doucet. No place for Holt in Arizona. (0/5)

San Fransico 49ers- Imagine Holt and Bruce back together. Just for that the 49ers might try to sign Holt. (3/5)

Seattle Seahawks- With the signing of Houshmanzadeh, they would have too much money tied up at the position. (1/5)

St. Louis Rams- He's not coming back after how they phased him out last year. (0/5)

NFC East

Dallas Cowboys- You can never know what Jerry Jones might do next, but with Roy Williams as the No. 1, they are probably set with Miles Austin probably the No. 2.

New York Giants- With the status of Plaxico Burress up in the air, they could always use some veteran help. (4/5)

Philadelphia Eagles- Get McNabb a decent wide receiver. Imagine what he can do with Holt on one side and Desean Jackson on the other. (4/5)

Washington Redskins- They have shown they're willing to spend, and they do need another wide receiver. Not a major need though. (3/5)

AFC North

Pittsburgh Steelers- Despite the loss of Nate Washington in free agency, I think they're three-deep in the position with Hines Ward, Limas Sweed, and Santonio Holmes. (2/5)

Baltimore Ravens- Their situation with Derrick Mason would determine whether they have interest in Holt. If they let Mason go, they can replace with Torry Holt in a heartbeat. (3/5)

Cleveland Browns- Anything is possible right now in Cleveland, with Mangini cutting and adding players all the time. They still have Braylon Edwards and Donte Stallworth as their two starting wideouts, but how much confidence do they have in the pair? (3/5)

Cinncinati Bengals- They lost T.J. Houshmanzadeh but they added Lauverenes Coles and still have Chad 'Ocho Cinco' Johnson. With so much money tied to the wide receiver and more pressing needs elsewhere, the Bengals can be ruled out. (0/5)

AFC South

Indianapolis Colts- They do need a wide receiver after letting Marvin Harrison walk. Holt is younger, but not by much and I would assume that the Colts will draft a wideout instead of signing one, unless they can get him for cheap. (1/5)

Jacksonville Jaguars- Their wide receiver crop is still shaky, and a team that could try to get Holt. But have so far shown no interest in pursuing the other wide outs in free agency. Is Holt too good to pass up? (3/5)

Tennessee Titans- They almost traded for Holt but it failed to materialize because Holt did not want to restructure his contract. Now that he has to renegotiate a deal, I would expect that the Titans be first in line. (5/5)

Houston Texans- They have Andre Johnson, who's the best or at least top two wide out after last season's performance. Could provide him some help on the other side of the field if it didn't cost too much. (3/5)

AFC WEST

Denver Broncos- Their starting wide receivers are going to be Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall. Unless they expect Holt to add some leadership, he's not going to Denver. (1/5)

Kansas City Chiefs- They do need to find Dwayne Bowe another wide receiver to take the pressure of him as well as Tony Gonzalez. Holt would be a decent fit in Kansas. Question is, would he go to a team that was 2-14 last year? (4/5)

Oakland Raiders- The Raiders need an upgrade in the wide receiver position, with Javon Walker and Ashely Lelie having a horrible year last season. Al Davis loves fast runners and although Holt might have lost a step or two, he can still run. (4/5)

AFC EAST

Patriots- Randy Moss, Wes Welker and now they add Jabar Gaffney and Joey Galloway. No way Holt's going to New England. (0/5)

Miami- They are in need at the wide receiver position, and they haven't made a move so far, not even trying to pursue him. Miami probably thought they would upgrade the position from the draft, and unless Pennington walks into Parcell's office and says he wants him, I don't think Holt will be wearing teal next season (3/5)

Buffalo- They just signed Terrell Owens to pair with Lee Evans. (0/5)

New York Jets- The Jets need a wide receiver after letting Coles leave in free agency. However, the Jets did say to the local media that they have no interest in Holt. We can only guess whether it's a ploy or a genuine comment. (3/5)

When it's all said and done, I would expect to see Holt residing in either Illinois, or Tennessee next year.
