New York Marathon Shouldn't Be Rescheduled Until 2013

Hurricane damage is tough business to deal with.

I have an idea from growing up in Florida. Residents want to help others in recovery as well as themselves, but many have to get back to work. This will be prevalent in Manhattan post-Sandy, where tons of people take public transportation to work in NYC.

That’s why the New York City Marathon, if rescheduled, needs to happen in 2013. Recovery is a delicate process in which the state of New York and the New York City Roadrunners can’t truly measure.

While the running conditions may be decent enough for 2,000 to run, there are more important tasks to deal with than marathoning. Many participants realized this and resigned from the race.

For this same reason, the organizations that run the marathon would seem hypocritical. There wouldn’t be an emotional burden; those feelings were already respected when they canceled the race on Friday.

With the fall season only lasting for a month more, the next best time for marathon weather would be in mid-March at the earliest. Runners would have stable marathon conditions in which they could get their best times. There would not be any uproar concerning a run in springtime New York, that’s for sure.  

While a rescheduling in three weeks may be too early, one In March would be insensible. There would be no reason to have one race in March, while some would be expected to come back in November.

This puts the marathon organizers in a tough bind, one that they wouldn’t want to step on anybody’s toes and cause controversy.

Yet a marathon before November 2013 would raise relief funds and provide a sense of normalcy to New York and New Jersey citizens. Their areas may need time for relief and recovery, but they will be able to celebrate life through this event.

If and when the NYC Marathon happens, the most realistic option for rescheduling will be in 2013, and no earlier.

Let's not make this decision tougher than it needs to be.
