Breaking News: Cubs Name MIke Fontenot Starting Second Baseman

Tab BamfordMar 14, 2009

On Saturday, Chicago Cubs' manager, Lou Piniella, made one of the crucial roster decisions for the team by naming Mike Fontenot as the starting second baseman.

This will push Aaron Miles, who was signed to a two-year contract this winter, to be the primary backup at second, short and third.

Fontenot, who will turn 29 in early June, was acquired from Baltimore as part of the deal for Sammy Sosa.

Sosa is no longer in baseball.

Fontenot, who continues a long-standing tradition of short players, has shown surprising power from his listed playing size of five feet, eight inches tall and 170 pounds.

In 2008, he hit nine home runs in 243 at bats. He projects to bat sixth in the Cubs regular batting order.

Among the diminutive legends on Chicago's North Side, have been infielder Augie Ojeda, current shortstop Ryan Theriot and, of course, legendary outfielder-pitcher, Doug Descenzo.
