Raiders Continue To Improve O-Line, Sign Barnes For One Year

big ROC Stockton, CAAnalyst IIIMarch 14, 2009

The on again off again negotiating between the Raiders and Khalif Barnes is finally over.  The Raiders sign the free-agent left tackle to a one-year deal.

Barnes is a four-year veteran with 57 starts in 60 games played.  He's been clearing lanes for Fred Taylor and MJD and now he will have another stable of great RBs to block for.

It was initially reported that we were close to signing him long term but what was on the table wasn't exactly what Barnes thought he was worth.

A one-year deal gives Barnes a chance to prove that he is worth a big, long-term contract.  It also gives Al Davis and Tom Cable a chance to see if the 6'4" 325 lbs tackle can excel in the zone-blocking-scheme.

The O-Line is almost set now.  Henderson and Barnes will battle for the LT position and the other will start at RT.  The Raiders clearly won't be drafting a tackle with the No. 7 pick now but should be targeting a C/G in the second round.  Hopefully Alex Mack or Max Unger is still on the board.

Well there you have it Raider Nation.  The silver and black finally made a much needed acquisition to shore up the offensive line.  This opens the door for us to go either defense or WR with the No. 7 pick.
