Breeders' Cup Draw 2012: Long Shots Worth Wagering on

Ben ChodosJun 4, 2018

Horse racing often offers twists, turns and surprises, and the 2012 Breeders’ Cup has several contenders that have an excellent chance to continue this trend.

Santa Anita Park is one of the most storied track’s in the sport, and a few underdogs will be trying to make history in the Southern California sunshine this weekend.

The Classic race is the main event and post time is on Saturday, November 3 and 8:30 p.m. ET.

All odds and post information are available at BreedersCup.com, and here are the long shots that have the best shot to turn heads.

Handsome Mike, 30-1, Post No. 7

The last time trainer Doug O’Neill and jockey Mario Gutierrez teamed up for a major race, it produced a magical result.

These two were major character’s in I’ll Have Another’s fairy tale start to this past Triple Crown season that ultimately ended in disappointment as the thoroughbred had to be withdrawn from the Belmont Stakes with a swollen tendon in its foot.

The oddsmakers certainly do not believe lightning will strike twice, but the Classic offers the chance to capitalize on these two men’s ability to surprise in major races.

Richard’s Kid, 12-1, Post No. 9

O’Neill has doubled-down on his chances to win the marquee race at the Breeders’ Cup, and Richard’s Kid is another one of his horses.

However, just a few months ago, this thoroughbred belonged to Bob Baffert. The San Diego Union-Tribune notes that the horse was transferred from Baffert to O’Neill in August.

With two trainers who achieved incredible success during the Triple Crown season both having their hands in this horse’s development, Richard’s Kid provides an intriguing option for those trying to pick a winner.

Alpha, 20-1, Post No. 3

Alpha was impressive enough to race in the Kentucky Derby earlier this year, although it did not post an impressive finish.

Still, this horse has talent and now has another chance to prove it in a prestigious race. It won the Travers this August and certainly showed that it could really let loose.

While Alpha is a long shot for a reason, it certainly has the potential to shock the spectators if it puts everything together on Saturday.
