AJ Lee: What Is Former RAW General Manager's Next Move in WWE?

Mike ChiariJun 2, 2018

One week after being forced to resign from her post as RAW general manager, A.J. Lee was hired back to WWE as a diva by Vickie Guerrero. A.J. is certainly in a state of flux, and there are several possibilities for her next role within the company.

Vickie allowed A.J. to become an in-ring competitor once again under the condition that she never again lay a finger on her.

A.J. accepted the terms and was immediately put in a match against Beth Phoenix on RAW. A.J. initially won with a roll-up, but Vickie restarted the match and Beth came out on top.

Beth was then fired by Vickie, but A.J.'s situation is the one of interest.

She hasn't been used as a wrestler since becoming Daniel Bryan's valet during the road to WrestleMania last year, so this is a big transition for her. She was considered an impressive in-ring competitor during her time on the independent scene and in WWE developmental.

If the goal is to simply make her a diva, then she can thrive.

There are obviously bigger plans for her since she is entangled in this affair angle with John Cena. Vickie told Vince McMahon and the board of directors that A.J. and Cena were having an inappropriate relationship. That is what led to A.J.'s ouster.

Nothing has been proven, although Vickie did offer up some evidence on RAW.

The first piece was a photo of A.J. and Cena from what they have called a business dinner. The second was a video that showed A.J. and Cena getting on an elevator together. This angered Cena and caused him to throw Dolph Ziggler to the mat when he came to the ring.

Cena certainly looked guilty, but there is no way that an affair between them will be proven true.

Cena is the face of the WWE and the company wouldn't do anything to make him look like a liar. A.J. has been making eyes at Cena, though, and her unstable personality could very well lead to her making a move on him. I doubt Cena would reciprocate, but it's very difficult to predict what the WWE's endgame is when it comes to this storyline.

The WWE has worked very hard to develop A.J.'s psychotic character, and the writers aren't likely to waste that by making her solely a wrestler.

The divas division could certainly use a shot in the arm with Beth now seemingly out of the picture, but A.J. doesn't have the time to put forth the effort required to remain relevant in that role.

I realize that it's a long shot, but perhaps A.J. will eventually end up back with CM Punk.

The way I see it, Cena is going to face Punk for the WWE Championship at TLC no matter what. Punk will still be champion since he is taking part in a five-on-five match at Survivor Series and won't be defending his title.

Also, since the WWE Champion will face The Rock at Royal Rumble, having Punk versus Cena at TLC makes sense. Most have figured that either Punk or Cena would be The Rock's opponent, so it should be decided once and for all at TLC. I can definitely see the romance angle between Cena and A.J. lasting until then, with A.J. somehow costing Cena that match at TLC.

Punk has found a way to get out of Dodge with his title on a number of occasions, including a draw against Cena at Night of Champions and a win over Ryback at Hell in a Cell, thanks to the actions of referee Brad Maddox. He would obviously have something up his sleeve to thwart Cena at TLC.

A.J. may very well be his ace in the hole.

That would also explain the Maddox situation as it was mentioned numerous times on RAW that A.J. hired him. It can be said that A.J. was working with Punk behind the scenes all along and that her hiring of Maddox was meant to help Punk in the future. He made a mistake in a Punk vs. Cena tag match last month as he didn't see Punk's foot on the rope, but perhaps that was a way of covering up his true intentions.

A.J. has always been a complete wildcard, and I fully expected her to turn heel with Daniel Bryan several months back, but that never came to fruition. The possibility remains present, and I will be very interested to see if her courting of Cena is part of a master plan put together by Punk and Paul Heyman.
