Klara Myren Ties Vermont Record with 4 Points in 1 Game

Mark StaffieriJun 2, 2018

October 16 will be a date that Klara Myren shall not forget very soon. As the Vermont Catamounts earned their first Hockey East conference win of the season (a 4-3 upset of New Hampshire), Myren tied Peggy Wakeham’s  program record for most points in one contest with four.

Wakeham achieved the mark with one goal and three helpers against the Union Dutchwomen on October 10, 2008. Myren logged identical tallies of two goals and two assists to match the feat. The record represents the continuation of a great season for Myren.

In the first seven games of the season, Myren accumulated three goals and six assists. During the entire 2011-12 campaign, Myren had a mere eight points.

The record-breaking night saw Myren involved in all of the Catamounts’ four goals. The New Hampshire Wildcats team boasts two of the finest prospects in the NCAA—offensive defender Alexis Crossley from Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia and Finnish netminder Vilma Vaattovaara.

Myren outshone them both.

Hannah Armstrong, daughter of former Toronto Maple Leafs player Tim Armstrong, opened the scoring in the contest as New Hampshire jumped to a 1-0 lead.

The 13:34 mark of the first period saw Myren log her first goal of the contest, as the Catamounts evened the score. Less than two minutes later, Myren assisted on a score by Brittany Zuback to give Vermont its first lead of the contest.

By the end of the first period, New Hampshire struck again, as freshman Sara Carlson logged a goal for the third consecutive game.

The second period belonged to the Wildcats. Vaattovaara made two saves as the Wildcats outshot Vermont 11-2. New Hampshire jumped ahead with a 3-2 advantage on the scoresheet during the second frame. The Wildcats marker was logged by freshman Jonna Curtis with 8:01 left in the second.

Heading into the third period, Myren buried the puck past Vaattovaara, and the score was tied again. The game-winning tally for Vermont would come at the 15:15 mark, as Meghan Huertas put a rebound past the Finnish netminder for her first loss of the season.

The win marked the first conference victory for new Catamounts head coach Jim Plumer, who replaces Tim Bothwell. Ironically, the last four conference wins for the Catamounts have all come at the expense of the Wildcats.
