Keeping Kiffin on a Short Leash Still Proving Hard For Vol Administration

Larry BurtonMar 14, 2009

First of all, thanks to LSU Freek for the photo.  For a look at the whole hilarious animated version go to http://tinyurl.com/aznpcz .

Apparently with not one game coached so far, Lane Kiffin is wearing him welcome thin even among Tennessee's own administration.  In just the few short months since he's been there, the Athletic Director of Tennessee has publicly called him a liar.  That was chronicled here as well as in Sports Illustrated.  The school has also sent him several letters of reprimand for his file and the University President has apologised publicly for Kiffin's words and actions.

The latest Kiffin foot in mouth was when he told a potential recruit in front of witnesses that if this recruit went to South Carolina "He'd wind up pumping gas like everyone else that's played there."

Is there no depth to this man's stupidity?

First of all, there's no one, much less a South Carolina graduate who could find a job pumping gas these days.  Is Kiffin so stupid he doesn't know they stopped doing that years ago?

Secondly, even a high school player sees this as desperation.  If a man will say something like that to a recruit can you believe ANYTHING that comes out of his mouth?

I have been informed that the University called in Kiffin after this latest sewage spew from his mouth and told face to face that they are tired of his childish tirades and remarks making public news and to start acting professional or start looking for another job.

Apparently Kiffin may now have the shortest rope in the SEC without ever having coached a game.  I know from personal talks with Nick Saban and staff that Alabama will bury them as deep as they can.  Urban Meyer is going to hang 60 points on them if he can and Steve Spurrier has said he can't wait to meet up with him and teach the kid a thing or two.

I have at least a dozen UT fans who are friends of mine that are already of sick and ashamed of Kiffin and only know one fan who is still in the "Give him a chance" camp.

I have been told that UT Administrators have even had to ask Kiffin's dad, assistant coach Monte Kiffin, to intercede and talk sense to his son.  Boy, talk about putting his dad and his son's employee in a tough position.

Sports writers around the country are just waiting for the official SEC media days.  Many are watering at the mouth wondering what Kiffin will come up with that many microphones in front of his face.

Personally, I think he'll be very quiet, giving them no ammunition to further their writing of him being the new "Mouth of the South".  I think he'll be a pretty short leash.  I think he'll be a good school boy.

Unless of course someone like Spurrier calls him out, then get the cameras ready.  You can only keep an idiot quiet for so long.
